Chapter 3 - The Sirens and the Boardroom

Vanessa stepped back, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at Adrian’s pale, trembling face. "Adrian? What is that? Why is everyone looking at their phones?"
Below them, the peaceful party had dissolved into complete bedlam.
"What is the meaning of this, Holloway?" Senator Vance shouted from the foot of the stairs, holding up his tablet display. "I just received an automated notice from the Securities and Exchange Commission! Holloway Capital’s assets have been frozen by an emergency court injunction!"
"My investment capital!" a tech founder yelled from the dining room. "The clearing house just rejected our wire transfer! Who owns the equity lines?"
Adrian couldn't speak. His throat felt dry, choked by a wave of cold, suffocating panic that made his knees buckle.
He turned toward the hallway leading back to the master bedroom suite.
"Mara..." he choked out.
Before he could take two steps toward the corridor, the heavy double front doors of the mansion were pushed open.
Four paramedics carrying a heavy medical stretcher rushed into the foyer, flanked by three uniformed state troopers and a woman wearing a tailored charcoal suit—Evelyn Vance, the chief legal counsel for the St. Claire Private Investment Office.
Evelyn didn't look at the party guests. She didn't look at the catered tables or the champagne fountains.
She walked straight up the marble staircase, her heels clicking sharply against the stone.
"Adrian Holloway," Evelyn announced, her voice flat, clinical, and completely devoid of human warmth. "I am serving you with a formal notice of corporate severance and an emergency protective order executed by the primary trustee of the St. Claire Estate."
"What primary trustee?" Adrian stammered, backing into the wall, his hands shaking violently as he pointed toward the stairs. "I built Holloway Capital! I signed the formation papers!"
"You signed the formation papers using twenty-two million dollars in convertible debt issued by your wife's family trust, Adrian," Evelyn corrected him, pulling a thick stack of certified legal documents from her leather briefcase.
"Clause 9 of the primary debt agreement explicitly stated that in the event of documented physical endangerment, marital fraud, or reckless asset endangerment, the St. Claire Trust retained the absolute right to execute a full debt-to-equity conversion."
Evelyn stepped closer, her eyes fixing onto Adrian's terrified face like an iron blade.

"Mara St. Claire didn't just authorize a financial restructuring from her bedroom floor, Mr. Holloway."
"She just bought your entire life for one dollar."
