Chapter 3 - THE GHOST IN THE WARD

The transition from the high-adrenaline chaos of the trauma bay to the quiet, mechanical hum of the recovery ward was absolute.

Claire lay in the center of the bed, her face no longer gray, her vitals stabilized after a successful emergency salpingectomy.

I stood at the foot of her bed, holding her updated recovery chart, my face a calm, unyielding mask of professional discipline.

The door opened quietly, and my husband, Daniel Reeves, stepped into the room, his hand resting reassuringly against my shoulder.

"The forensic accounting firm just finalized the certified bank records, Emily," Daniel said, his low, steady voice bringing a sudden, solid comfort.

"The trust administrator confirmed that Claire forged your signature on four separate tuition withdrawal forms over a three-year period."

"She systematically drained seventy-four thousand dollars from your grandfather's educational fund to finance her luxury rental in Malibu."

"And the fake email IP addresses have been traced directly to her personal laptop."

I looked down at Claire, whose eyes were slowly fluttering open, the anesthetic finally wearing off as the morning light entered the room.

She saw me standing there, flanked by the senior civil-rights attorney she had once tried to make me look small beside.

"Emily..." she whispered, her voice dry, her fingers clutching the edge of the hospital blanket with a sudden, primitive fear.

"Are... are you going to tell them?"

May you like

"I don't have to tell them, Claire," I said, my voice flat, cold, and entirely empty of any childhood attachment.

"Because the federal marshals are already waiting in the main lobby with the arrest warrants for grand larceny and corporate forgery."
