Chapter 5 - THE LEGAL AMBUSH

The grand executive boardroom of the Bennett estate administration was silent as a tomb when the meeting commenced.
My father, Richard, sat at the head of the mahogany table, his face a pale, sweating mask of terror as he looked at the legal papers.
Beside him sat Claire, her face still slightly swollen from surgery, her designer silk blouse looking out of place in the clinical light of the office.
"This is a private family matter, Mr. Reeves," the Bennett family attorney stated, trying to maintain a smooth, professional confidence.
"We are prepared to offer a private restitution agreement to cover the missing educational funds with a six percent interest rider."
"The restitution window closed five years ago, Mr. Vance," Daniel said, placing the certified federal indictments on the table.
"This is no longer a civil dispute over a trust fund."
"The state prosecutor has officially filed charges for systemic identity theft, wire fraud, and grand larceny."
"And we have the recorded IP logs showing Claire creating the fraudulent academic failure emails from your personal residence."
The double doors of the boardroom were pushed open, and two uniformed federal marshals stepped onto the polished floorboards.
The heavy, metallic clack of the steel handcuffs closing around Claire’s wrists was the most satisfying sound of my life.
"Mom! Dad! Help me!" Claire shrieked, her body shaking violently as she was forced down from her leather chair.
"She’s trying to ruin me! Emily is doing this because she hates me!"
My mother, Patricia, reached out her hand, but the lead marshal blocked her path with a cold, unyielding authority.

"The law doesn't care about your drama, Claire," I said, my voice carrying the absolute weight of a physician who had survived the storm.
"It only cares about the ledger."
