Chapter 6 - THE DECIMATION OF CLAIRE

The ninety-six hours of arrogant legal maneuvers the Bennett family had prepared collapsed into a pathetic, high-pitched wail of pure terror.
The state supreme court executed an immediate, non-negotiable freeze on all outstanding assets tied to the family trust.
My parents were forced to liquidate their suburban home to pay the massive legal defense fees and the state restitution penalties.
Claire stood before the federal judge three weeks later, her blonde hair unwashed, her designer clothes replaced by an orange jumpsuit.
"The defendant’s actions constitute a systematic, malicious campaign of domestic fraud and professional sabotage," the judge declared.
"You stripped your own sister of her educational security, forged her name to clear your private debts, and let her suffer in silence."
"This court sentences you to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of early parole."
My parents sat in the back row of the public gallery, their faces hollow, their social standing completely destroyed.
They looked toward the front row where I sat beside Daniel, hoping for a single glance of mercy or family recognition.
I did not look back.
I stood up, adjusted my coat, and walked out of the courtroom, leaving the ghosts of my past permanently locked in their own cells.

Our family’s reign of quiet, domestic cruelty was officially over, and the empty space they left was filled with peace.
