Chapter 3 - The False Bottom and the True Deed

By 2:00 a.m., my small apartment had been transformed into a temporary precinct office. Forensic accountants from the state district attorney's office were carefully cataloging every page recovered from the wardrobe's hidden compartment. The cherry-red wood lay split open, its grand secret finally laid bare under the harsh glare of my kitchen lights.

I sat at the counter, drinking a bitter cup of black coffee, watching the specialists examine the true deed to the family estate. My father had been a meticulous man; he knew his family's greed better than anyone else. He had built the false bottom of that wardrobe decades ago, using it to store the original corporate foundation papers that Daniel had spent the last three years trying to forge.

"Mr. Vance," one of the female investigators called out, beckoning me over to the table where the steel lockbox now stood open. "You need to see this. Your brother Daniel wasn't working alone."

She pointed to a series of wire transfer receipts dated during the exact weeks I was sleeping on the hospital floor. Millions of dollars had been moved from the corporate accounts directly into an offshore private fund registered under a name I didn't expect to see: Rachel’s husband, Arthur.

The entire inheritance meeting had been a beautifully orchestrated performance. My mother pretended to favor Daniel out of pity for his mortgage, while Rachel played the grateful sister receiving a vehicle and some family gold. In reality, they had already carved up the carcass of my father’s life savings long before his heart stopped beating in room 304.

"They used the hospital stay to keep you occupied," Detective Vance noted, leaning against the counter with a grim expression. "They knew you were the only one who would stay by his side, so they kept you in that hallway while they cleared out the safe-deposit boxes at City National Bank."

"They thought my silence was weakness," I said, my fingers tightening around the warm coffee mug until my knuckles turned white. "They thought because I didn't fight them in the living room, I was going to let them walk away with everything he built."

"Well, they left you the one thing that matters," the investigator said, lifting the primary corporate certificate. "This document gives you fifty-one percent controlling interest in Vance Global Logistics effective immediately. Your brother Daniel is currently occupying a CEO chair he legally doesn't own."

I looked at the clock on the wall. It was nearly 4:00 a.m. In exactly four hours, the corporate office in downtown Minneapolis would open for the morning trading session. Daniel would be arriving in his new custom suit, ready to address the board of directors as the new head of the family empire.

"Detective," I said, standing up and smoothing down my jacket. "I think it's time we pay my brother a visit at his new office."
