Chapter 6 - The Police At The Front Porch

By late afternoon, the setting sun cast long, dramatic shadows across the front porch of the family estate on Elm Street. The beautiful colonial house that my father had spent forty years maintaining stood surrounded by four black municipal cruisers, their yellow police line tape fluttering in the cool autumn breeze.

I stood by the iron gates, watching the moving crews carry out the expensive leather furniture and the luxury electronics that Daniel had purchased using the stolen corporate funds. My mother sat on the wooden porch steps, her elegant cashmere coat ruined by the dust of the ongoing search, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees.

Rachel and her husband Arthur were parked by the curb, their Chevy Tahoe already hooked up to a commercial repossession vehicle while their children cried in the back seat of a local taxi.

"David," my uncle walked up beside me, his hands deep in his pockets as he looked at the grand old house. "I want you to know I had no part in what they did. Your father told me about the wardrobe three days before he went into the hospital. He knew you were the only one with the strength to carry the truth."

"Thank you, Uncle," I said, keeping my eyes on the front door where my father's old portrait still hung in the main foyer. "I just wish he didn't have to die alone in that room before they finally stopped taking from him."

"He wasn't alone, son," my uncle said gently, placing a heavy hand on my shoulder. "He had you. And that was all he ever really needed to know his legacy was safe."

Detective Vance walked out of the front door, holding a small black velvet box he had recovered from my mother's private safe hidden behind the master bedroom closet. He walked down the porch steps and handed it to me with a respectful nod.

Inside the box were my grandmother's treasured gold bracelets—the ones my mother had happily handed to Rachel just twenty-four hours earlier.

"These were never legally theirs to give, Mr. Vance," the detective said. "The grand jury has officially issued indictments for Daniel Vance, Rachel Vance-Arthur, and your mother for conspiracy to commit corporate grand larceny and deed forgery. Their arraignment is set for tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m."

My mother looked up from the steps, her eyes hollow and filled with a cold, desperate loneliness as she watched the state troopers guide her toward the leading transport vehicle. She didn't shout, she didn't cry, and she didn't call me greedy anymore.

She finally understood that the one worthless piece of furniture she had thrown away had become the stone that crushed her empire completely.
