Chapter 4 - The Sudden Real Estate Eviction

The corporate headquarters of Vance Global Logistics occupied the top three floors of the glass tower overlooking the river. At 8:30 a.m., the lobby was bustling with executives, analysts, and administrative staff rushing to begin the workweek. I walked through the main glass doors, flanked by Detective Vance and two corporate attorneys provided by the state trust.
I wasn't wearing my old winter coat or the worn-out shoes I had worn in the hospital hallway. I wore a tailored dark suit my father had bought for my college graduation—the one my mother told me was "too formal for someone of your standing."
As we approached the executive elevator, the receptionist stood up, her face tight with recognition. "Mr. David Vance? I'm sorry, but your brother Daniel strictly stated that you are not permitted on the executive floors without a scheduled appointment."
"I don't need an appointment to enter a building I legally own, Sarah," I said smoothly, sliding the certified trust injection order across the polished marble desk. "Call security if you like, but tell them to bring their keys, because we are changing the locks on the penthouse office in ten minutes."
The elevator ride to the fiftieth floor was completely silent. When the doors slid open, the contrast was immediate. The executive floor was lined with expensive oil paintings and custom leather furniture. At the end of the long hallway, the double doors to the CEO suite stood wide open.
Daniel was sitting behind the massive walnut desk, laughing loudly as he showed his wife a catalog of luxury winter homes in Aspen. My mother sat in the corner armchair, sipping an espresso, looking every bit the victorious matriarch.
"David?" Daniel’s laugh vanished instantly, his eyes widening as he saw me walk into the room, followed by three law enforcement officers. "What the hell is the meaning of this? I told you yesterday that your share was the wardrobe. Get out of my office before I have security throw you out."
My mother stood up, her teacup rattling against its saucer. "David, stop this embarrassing display immediately! Your brother is the head of this family now. Have you no respect for your father's memory?"
"My father's memory is currently sitting in a evidence vault at the state precinct, Mother," I replied, stepping up to the edge of the walnut desk. "Along with the true will that you and Daniel spent the last two months trying to bury."

Daniel stood up, his face flushing a dangerous shade of purple. "That will is ancient history! The court recognized my power of attorney!"
"The court recognized a forgery, Daniel," Detective Vance stepped forward, placing a certified federal freeze notice directly on top of the Aspen real estate catalog. "By order of the State District Court, all assets under the Vance estate are frozen pending a formal grand jury investigation into corporate fraud and elder exploitation. You have exactly five minutes to clear your personal items from this desk."
