Chapter 2 - THE SILENT ALARM

The heavy, metallic click of the security officer's radio cut through the cold hospital air like a physical blow.

Grant Hale stood entirely frozen between the hospital bed and the glass window, his chest heaving as the final remnants of his smooth, polished mask began to crumble.

Through the thin plastic oxygen mask, Claire drew in a long, shuddering breath, her fingers clutching the edge of the cotton blanket as she tried to anchor her shaking body to the reality of her survival.

"Base, this is Unit Four, we need immediate police backup in Room 814 for an attempted homicide of a patient," the security officer commanded into his collar microphone, his eyes never leaving Grant's face.

The silence that followed was heavy and suffocating, interrupted only by the rhythmic, high-pitched beeping of the fetal heart monitor that still confirmed the survival of the child.

Dr. Adrian Shaw stepped directly between Grant and the bed, his broad shoulders blocking any physical path the desperate man might try to take toward his vulnerable wife.

"The police are already on their way, Grant, and the video feed from our surgical observation camera has already been routed to the district attorney's secure server," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register.

"You thought because she was hospitalized, because she was exhausted and weak from the emergency fetal procedure, you could write her off as a tragic statistic."

"You should have known that every single room in this high-risk maternal ward is monitored under a continuous federal clinical safety protocol."

"You're making a massive mistake, doctor," Grant whispered, his hands trembling as he slowly reached toward his breast pocket, his fingers searching for his phone.

"I am the primary trustee of the Hale Logistics Group, and my legal team will have this entire hospital locked in a civil litigation suit before the sun rises."

"Your legal team cannot litigation-proof a high-definition recording of your hands pressing a pillow into your wife's face, Mr. Hale," Adrian replied with absolute, freezing calm.

Outside the door, the distant, rhythmic wail of police sirens began to echo through the quiet streets of the city, their flashing blue lights painting the high glass windows of the hospital in cold, rhythmic stripes.
