Chapter 3 - THE BROKEN MASK

The transition from a terrified, suffocating victim back into a woman of unyielding resolve was instantaneous for Claire.
As the first two police officers burst through the double doors of Room 814, Claire slowly reached down, her fingers gently covering her swollen stomach where her daughter had finally settled into a quiet, steady rhythm.
She did not cry out for her husband, nor did she look at the man who had spent the last three years systematically draining her family's trust fund.
"Officers, secure the suspect's personal electronic devices immediately, because he has been using an encrypted application to coordinate the transfer of my grandfather's maritime patents," Claire said, her voice hoarse but completely steady.
Grant's face turned an instant, pasty shade of wet ash as the first officer grabbed his wrist, twisting his arm behind his back and snapping the steel handcuffs around his wrists with a heavy clack.
"This is an outrage!" Grant screamed, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, desperate whine that completely erased the last of his expensive, high-society charm.
"My wife is suffering from postpartum delusion, she's had a severe reaction to the anesthetics from the surgery!"
"The only delusion in this room is your belief that you are going to walk out of this building on your own feet, Mr. Hale," the lead officer said, pushing him toward the exit.
My sister-in-law, Vanessa, had been waiting in the parking lot below, but when she saw the flashing lights of the police cruisers, she immediately tried to start her car.

Two unmarked black SUVs blocked her path at the exit gate, their sirens screaming as federal agents stepped onto the pavement with their weapons drawn.
They had been tracking the offshore transfers of Northstar Strategic Consulting for three weeks, and the attempt on Claire's life had officially brought the federal hammer down.
