Chapter 6 - THE TRIAL OF THE SHADOW

The seventy-two hours of arrogant legal defenses the Hale family had prepared dissolved into a pathetic, high-pitched wail of pure terror.

As the federal marshals closed in on the platform, the heavy metallic click of the restraints closing around Arthur’s wrists was the most satisfying sound of my life.

"Claire, please!" Grant sobbed from the defense bench, his face wet with frantic, streaming tears as he looked at his wife.

"I did it to protect our family's name! I didn't want us to lose everything!"

"You didn't protect our name, Grant," I said, looking down at him with dead, unyielding eyes.

"You managed your greed, and when you couldn't get my signature, you tried to take my life and the life of our daughter."

The state moved with a clinical, relentless speed that left no room for appeal or high-society political intervention.

The unedited video from the surgical observation camera was played on a continuous loop in court, silencing every high-priced defense attorney.

The gallery watched in breathless, paralyzed horror as the man who claimed he "found her breathing weakly" was shown pressing the pillow into my face.

My mother-in-law, Sophia, was arrested as an accessory to fraud, her designer clothes replaced by an orange institutional jumpsuit.
