Chapter 2 - The Silent Empress

The silence following my order was heavier than the crystal that had just shattered.
My groom, Julian, stood trembling, his eyes darting toward the exits as if he expected the walls to close in.
He looked at me as if I were a stranger.
For three years, I had played the part of the modest, supportive bride.
I had let him believe he was the mastermind behind our success, the one who held the power.
I had been his secret shadow, the hand that had guided the board of directors and whispered the right instructions into the right ears.
"What... what did you do?" Julian stuttered, his voice cracking.
I didn't answer him.
I turned my back on him and began to walk toward the exit, my ruined dress trailing a wake of sticky residue across the floor.
Every step I took was a reclamation of my own life.
I walked past the woman in the emerald dress—his secret mistress, I assumed—who looked small and frightened, her emerald silk dress now as wrinkled as her composure.
"You can't do this!" she hissed. "I'm pregnant with his child!"
I stopped.
I didn't look at her.
"Then I suggest you ask him for child support, though I suspect you’ll find his bank accounts quite empty," I replied.
I pushed open the heavy oak doors and stepped out into the night air.
My car was waiting, my driver—the man in the gray suit—holding the door open.
He tipped his hat.
"The lawyers are already at the office, ma'am. They have the preliminary injunctions ready for your signature."
"Good," I said, sliding into the cool leather interior.
As the car pulled away, I watched the Sterling Estate recede into the distance.
I felt a phantom weight lift from my shoulders, the weight of a pretense that had lasted for far too long.
They thought I had been humiliated.
They thought I had been broken.
But as I looked at my reflection in the window, I realized I was just getting started.
