Chapter 5 - The Architect of Shadows

The serenity of my townhouse was interrupted by a courier at dawn.
He wore a plain black suit and left behind a single, heavy envelope.
No return address.
Just my name, written in ink that looked suspiciously like dried blood.
I took it into my kitchen, my hands not shaking, though my heart pulsed a frantic rhythm.
I slit it open.
Inside was a series of photographs.
They weren't of me.
They were of the new orphanage I was funding in the city center.
Each photo showed the construction site at different angles, focusing on the support beams and the foundation.
A note was tucked beneath them.
“Foundations can be weakened, Elena. A house built on revenge has no support beams.”
I felt the temperature in the kitchen drop.
Someone was watching.
Someone who knew exactly what I had done to Julian and his family.
I grabbed my phone to call security, but the screen flickered.
A text message appeared.
“Don’t call for help. I’m the one who provided the evidence for your divorce. I’m the one who knew about the offshore accounts before you did.”
I slumped against the marble counter.
I had assumed I was the puppet master.
I had assumed I was the only one moving the chess pieces.
But I had been wrong.
I had been guided by an invisible hand.
The realization was more terrifying than anything Julian or Elena had ever done.
I walked to the balcony, looking down at the quiet street.
A black car sat idling near the park entrance.
It hadn't moved for an hour.
I wasn't the protagonist of this story anymore.
I was the subject of an experiment.
I went to my home office and logged into the server.
I searched for the IP address of the message.
Nothing.
It was a ghost signal.
I realized then that the fight for my life wasn't over.
It had just graduated to a higher level.
I wasn't just fighting for my company or my pride.
I was fighting for my autonomy.
I picked up the pen I had set down so confidently just a day before.
I started to write.
Not a plan for a foundation.
But a list of everyone I had interacted with during the divorce.
Every lawyer.
Every auditor.
Every banker.
May you like
One of them was a snake.
And I was going to find out which one before they struck again.
