Chapter 9 - The Unlikely Alliance

The penthouse felt like a tomb of memories, but I wasn't here to mourn.
I was here to recruit.
Julian opened the door, his appearance a shadow of the CEO I once knew.
He was unshaven, his eyes hollowed by weeks of legal scrutiny and corporate exile.
"You shouldn't be here, Elena," he said, stepping back to let me in.
"The Foundation is coming for us both, Julian," I said, skipping the pleasantries.
I tossed the files from the Foundation onto his glass coffee table.
He looked at them, his breath hitching.
"How did you get these?"
"I took them."
I watched his reaction.
He didn't look angry; he looked terrified.
"They'll kill you for this," he whispered.
"They'll kill us both if we don't finish this," I countered. "You know the backdoors to the server. I have the physical evidence of the money laundering."
He looked at me, a flicker of the man I once married appearing in his eyes.
"Why help me? After what I did?"
"I'm not helping you," I said firmly. "I'm using you to destroy the thing that destroyed my father."
He sat down, his hands trembling as he flipped through the documents.
"If we expose this, the company disappears. Everything you worked for, everything we built—it all burns."
"It was already burning, Julian. I’m just changing who holds the match."
He stood up, walking toward the window.
"I need time to think."
"We don't have time," I said. "They already know we have the files."
The room shook as a low rumble echoed through the penthouse.
I looked out the window.
A construction vehicle across the street had been driven intentionally into the building’s power grid.
The lights went out.
"They're coming," Julian whispered.
I didn't reach for a weapon.
I reached for the drive containing the encryption keys.
"We have to go."
We moved through the shadows of the skyscraper, the stairwell a dark tunnel leading to our potential salvation—or our end.
The alliance was born in the dark, forged in the fear of a common enemy.
We weren't lovers, and we weren't even friends.

We were survivors.
And we were going to make them bleed for every lie.
