Chapter 12 - The Reckoning

The studio was cold, the air thick with the smell of ozone and fear.
I stood before the camera, the red light glowing like an eye.
I didn't need a script.
"My name is Elena Sterling," I began, my voice steady. "And for years, I have been a prisoner of a system designed to destroy me."
I told them about the files.
I told them about the Foundation.
I told them about the murder of my father and the theft of his legacy.
I didn't hold back.
I named names.
I cited accounts.
I laid bare the entire web of corruption that had poisoned the city.
When I finished, the studio was silent.
The anchors were speechless.
But the real reaction was outside.
The streets were alive with people demanding arrests, demanding justice, demanding change.
I walked out of the studio and into the cold night air.
The Foundation’s directors were already being swarmed by the press, their faces contorted in confusion and fear.
I saw the old man—my father’s mentor—sitting in his limousine, blocked by a sea of protesters.
He looked at me through the glass.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
I walked up to the car and tapped on the window.
He rolled it down.
"You destroyed everything," he hissed.
"I restored the balance," I said.
I turned away, my mission accomplished.
I had given the people the truth.
I had given the law the evidence.
I had given myself the future.
The Sterling name was forever tarnished, but the truth was finally clean.
I walked into the crowd, a stranger among the people I had freed.
I didn't have a mansion, I didn't have a company, and I didn't have a husband.
But I had something much better.
I had the truth.
And that was enough.
The dawn was breaking, and for the first time in my life, I wasn't waiting for anything.
I was just living.
