Chapter 2 - THE UNEDITED REGISTRY

The massive television screen above the evergreen garlands did not display a cozy holiday fireplace scene or a rolling loop of family photos.

Instead, the bright blue interface split into four crisp, high-definition security feeds, broadcasting a live, unedited perspective of the dining room from the hidden pinhole lenses I had installed six weeks prior.

Beatrice Sinclair’s diamond-heavy finger remained frozen in midair, her breath catching violently in her throat as the screen replayed the events of exactly seven minutes earlier.

The recording clearly showed Beatrice standing up, her face contorted in premeditated malice as she deliberately swiped her own arm across the table, violently launching the heavy porcelain platters and hot gravy directly onto my dress.

It showed Richard watching her with a calm, validating smirk, his fingers casually tapping the side of his wine glass while my children screamed in sudden terror.

It showed Chloe, his glamorous mistress, leaning over to whisper a calculated line of encouragement into Beatrice’s ear just before the theatrical performance began.

"What is the meaning of this digital stunt, Nora?" Richard demanded, his smooth, level voice cracking slightly as he slammed his crystal glass onto the damask cloth.

"You think a few distorted angles of a family dinner argument will invalidate a certified corporate audit signed by the board of trustees?"

"The audit your board signed was based on a falsified transaction log from your bankrupt shipping network in Panama, Richard," I said, my voice rising from a tremble into a freezing, absolute authority.

"You believed that because I was a grieving daughter, because I spent the last year managing my late father's estate in silence, I was completely blind to your ledger entries."

"You forgot that before my father established his logistics trust, he spent twenty years training me as a senior forensic accountant for the federal maritime division."

"I didn't access your secure company registries to steal your assets; I accessed them to document your systematic embezzlement of my father's infrastructure bonds."

Leo stood tall beside my hip, his small fingers still holding the black remote control like a weapon of pure, unyielding justice.

Lily’s crying slowly quieted into small, hitching breaths as she looked up at the screen, her childish mind finally realizing that the monsters in the room were the ones who were truly cornered.

Chloe quickly reached for her designer leather clutch, her polished nails scratching the gold clasp as she tried to stand up from the table.

"Richard, we need to leave this house right now," she whispered frantically, her aristocratic composure completely evaporating under the harsh blue light of the monitor.

"The server rooms... if she has a live feed, she has the external backup relays too."

"Nobody is leaving this dining room," a deep, booming voice announced from the heavy arched entrance of the estate.

The double doors swung open, and my older brother, Arthur, walked into the room wearing a sharp, dark wool overcoat, flanked by two uniformed federal marshals.
