Chapter 2 - THE ECHO OF THE BLAST

The silence that stretched across the grand foyer of the Caldwell mansion was so heavy, I could hear the rhythmic, frantic ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.

Ethan Caldwell’s dark eyes remained locked onto mine, searching my face with a cold, analytical intensity that seemed to strip away every defense I had.

"Emily," he said again, his voice dropping into a low, quiet frequency that sent a shiver straight down my spine.

"If you are lying to me, this is the last room you will ever walk into."

"I have no reason to lie to you, Mr. Caldwell," I whispered, my knees trembling so violently under my simple uniform skirt that I had to grip the edge of a nearby marble pedestal to remain standing.

"I have a mother who needs her rent paid, and a brother who needs his college tuition, and if I wanted to run, I wouldn't have run directly to you."

Ethan didn't hesitate; he slowly raised a single finger, signaling his personal bodyguards to halt their advance.

"Nathan," Ethan commanded, addressing his trusted secondary security detail, his voice carrying the calm, terrifying authority of a man who ruled New York's underworld.

"Deploy the sweeping frequency monitors to the garage."

"And find Marcus Reed."

Before Nathan could turn toward the service corridor, the heavy, metallic sound of a remote ignition signal echoed from the lower levels of the estate.

The concrete floorboards beneath our feet suddenly vibrated, a low, ominous rumble traveling through the stone like an earthquake.

A fraction of a second later, a deafening, monstrous explosion tore through the lower level, shattering the arched stained-glass windows of the grand foyer into a million flying shards.

The shockwave hit us like a physical fist, throwing me backward against the marble wall as the air was instantly filled with black, choking smoke and the smell of burning gasoline.

The armored SUV parked directly beneath the foyer had detonated, but the primary blast was not the only danger.

Through the thick, rolling smoke, three armed figures dressed in dark tactical gear burst through the shattered windows, their weapons raised to execute whoever survived.

"Ambush!" Nathan roared, drawing his weapon and firing a rapid succession of rounds to cover our retreat.

Ethan lunged toward me, his powerful frame throwing me flat against the floorboards as a volley of high-caliber rounds tore through the plaster walls directly above our heads.

"Stay down, Emily!" Ethan commanded, his body forming a solid, protective shield over mine as he returned fire with a steady, lethal precision.

But as he reached to pull me toward the secure panic room behind his office, a secondary, hidden explosive device inside the wall cavity detonated.

The impact of the second blast collapsed the heavy wooden archway, sending a massive timber beam crashing down onto the floor.

I felt a sudden, blinding pain explode through my chest as the debris pinned me to the concrete, the cold darkness of unconsciousness instantly rising to swallow me whole.

The last thing I saw before my eyes closed was Ethan Caldwell, the most feared man in the city, desperately clawing at the burning wood with his bare hands to reach me.
