Chapter 4 - THE HUNT FOR MARCUS REED

By 3:00 AM, the hospital wing was as quiet as a tomb, the red and blue flashing lights of the police cruisers painting the glass windows in rhythmic stripes.

My older brother, Captain Marcus Bennett of the Financial Crimes Division, stood in the corner of the room, his face a stern mask of professional worry.

"We have tracked the financial origin of the explosive devices, Ethan," Marcus said, placing a secure, encrypted digital folder on the bedside table.

"The money didn't come from your standard business rivals in New York."

"It was routed through a series of shell companies in Panama, funded directly by your untrustworthy uncle, Victor Caldwell."

"Victor has been running a massive real estate embezzlement scheme through our shipping lines, Ethan," I whispered, pulling the mask down slightly to speak.

"The morning I was cleaning his office, I found the transaction directories showing he had siphoned forty million dollars from our employee pension fund."

"He hired Marcus Reed to plant the bomb because he knew you were preparing to execute a full, forensic audit of his accounts this Friday."

Ethan stood up from his chair, his tall, imposing posture casting a long, dark shadow across the sterile hospital room.

"He wanted me dead before the shareholders' meeting," Ethan realized, a cold, sharp smile finally replacing the exhaustion on his handsome face.

"He believed that if he eliminated me, he could assume full, emergency guardianship over the Caldwell maritime patents."

"And Marcus Reed is currently hiding inside Victor's private estate in Long Island," Captain Bennett added, checking his tactical radio.

"They are preparing to flee the country on a private charter flight at sunrise."

"They aren't leaving New York, Marcus," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, silent frequency that made the nearby officers stand at attention.

"They wanted a war."

"And I am going to bring the entire fortress down on their heads."
