Part 17: The Birth of the New Grid

## Part 17: The Birth of the New Grid
The Maybach pulled onto the tarmac of the private terminal at JFK at 4:30 p.m. the next afternoon.
The New York skyline was a clear, brilliant block of blue ice against a winter sky, the gray storm from the previous week entirely gone.
Evelyn was already waiting by the entrance door of the Sovereign Tower logistics suite, her screen displaying a map of the entire East Coast shipping corridor.
"The corporate restructuring is complete, Madam Chairwoman," she said, her voice shaking with a deep, professional pride.
"The Vance name has been legally expunged from every terminal, crane, and hull from Maine to Florida."
"The new electric logistics grid has just gone live in the Newark harbor."
I sat at the head of the mahogany conference table, holding Lily against my shoulder as she made quiet, milk-warm sleeping sounds against my neck.
"Read the primary margin reports, Evelyn," I said.
"The Collins Maritime Conglomerate has just opened on the morning exchange up twenty-four percent," Evelyn said, clicking her keys with a clean, sharp rhythm.
"The union pension fund has been fully restored with a twelve-million-dollar premium surplus from the Swiss liquidation."
"And the old Vance mansion in Greenwich?"
"The staging team has completely cleared the property, ma'am," Marcus intervened from the doorway.
"The land has been officially turned over to the city of Greenwich to be developed as a public children’s park and medical rehabilitation center."
"Named after your mother."
"The Elizabeth Collins Foundation."
I looked out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows at the harbor below us, where the massive white cargo liners were moving in a perfect, silent matrix under the golden afternoon light.
For three years, the Vance family had looked at me like I was a poor, pregnant burden—a quiet girl they could humiliate and discard once they had used her father's signatures to secure their comfort.
They thought power was a collection of expensive suits, country club memberships, and stolen trust lines.
They had completely forgotten that you don't build an empire by letting your targets hold the books.
I stood up from the table, my hand resting flat against my daughter's warm back, feeling the steady, beautiful rhythm of her breathing.
The past was completely destroyed.
The borders were safe.
The ledger was balanced to the final penny.
"Evelyn," I said, walking toward the private express elevator doors.
"Yes, Madam Chairwoman?"
"Lock the databases."
"The audit is officially closed."
"Thank you, ma'am," she said, her finger executing a terminal command that turned the entire screen a quiet, permanent blue.
The elevator doors slid back, and Marcus guided us down into the cool evening air of the city.
The Maybach was waiting at the end of the driveway, its sleek black hull reflecting the gold light of the sunset.
I stepped inside the heated leather interior, the heavy door closing to shut out the remaining noise of the financial district.
I wasn't a burden.
May you like
I was the Queen of an empire.
And my daughter and I were going to rule it perfectly.
