Part 9: The Tarmac Interception

## Part 9: The Tarmac Interception

The Maybach tore through the industrial marshes of New Jersey at eighty miles an hour.

The low hangar roofs of the private airfield emerged from the gray fog like silver boxes sitting in the weeds.

At the end of the auxiliary runway, a sleek, white Gulfstream G550 was already idling, its jet engines producing a high-pitched, deafening whine that shook the tall wire fences.

A silver Mercedes sedan was parked directly beneath the wing, its trunk wide open, two leather travel cases sitting on the asphalt.

Richard Vance stood by the air-stair door, his wool coat flapping violently in the engine exhaust, his face twisted in a frantic rush.

Our car swerved onto the tarmac, stopping just twenty feet from his bumper.

Marcus stepped out first, his hand instantly unbuttoning his dark coat to reveal the silver badge of the federal enforcement division.

"Richard!" I called out, stepping out into the cold wind.

The roar of the jet engines drowned out the sound of my voice, but he saw my face through the gray sleet and froze, his foot halfway up the first step of the aluminum stairs.

"Cassidy!" he screamed over the noise, his voice raw with a sudden, desperate hatred.

"Get out of my way! The company is mine! I signed the original charters! You're just a standard beneficiary who got lucky because your father died before we could clear the ledger!"

"The ledger is already clear, Richard," I said, walking toward him, my boots silent against the wet asphalt.

"The federal marshals just entered your private hangar in Teterboro."

"They found the secondary backup drives you stole from the executive vault at two o'clock this morning."

Richard looked at the pilot inside the cockpit window, but the pilot didn't look back—he was currently turning off the primary fuel valves, the whine of the engines slowly dropping into a low, dying hum.

Two black government SUVs tore through the main hangar gates, their tires screaming against the concrete as they boxed in his silver Mercedes.

Four agents from the white-collar crime task force stepped out, their badges glittering under the grey Jersey sky.

"Richard Vance," the lead agent announced, pulling a heavy folder of warrants from his jacket.

"You are under arrest for federal flight to avoid prosecution, destruction of corporate evidence, and active participation in a grand larceny conspiracy."

Richard dropped his leather briefcase.

It hit the wet tarmac with a dull, hollow thud, the latch popping open to reveal forty-five thousand dollars in physical hundred-dollar bills and three encrypted gold flash drives.

He looked at the cash spilling into the puddles of oily water.

Then he looked at me, his eyes bloodshot, his old-money arrogance entirely gone, leaving nothing but a sixty-year-old man who had run out of exit routes.

"You ruined us, Cassidy," he whispered, his teeth chattering from the cold.

"We gave you a home. We let you carry that child in our house."

"You let me stay in your guest wing because you thought my silence meant I was weak, Richard," I said, my voice level, carrying the absolute finality of a closed account.

"But my silence was just an audit."

"And the audit is officially complete."

They clicked the steel cuffs around his wrists, turning him toward the waiting government vehicle while the auditors began to tag the private jet for immediate asset liquidation.

The airfield went completely quiet as the engines died.

I climbed back into the Maybach, my hand resting flat over my stomach as a sudden, sharp pressure made me catch my breath.

Not a kick this time.

A contraction.

A real one.

"Marcus," I said, my voice dropping an octave as I looked at the clock on the dashboard.

"Hospital. Now."
