Part 5: The Vault of the Dead Drop

## Part 5: The Vault of the Dead Drop

The rain had turned into a thick, blinding sleet by the time we reached Wall Street.

The heavy bronze doors of the Federal Reserve depository looked like the gates of a stone fortress under the yellow streetlamps.

Marcus kept his umbrella low, his eyes fixed on a silver Mercedes sedan parked illegally near the hydrants—the exact make and model of the car Jessica had used to flee the dining room hours earlier.

"She’s inside, ma'am," Marcus said, his hand resting flat against his coat.

"The vault security manager called my private line two minutes ago."

"She used Brendan’s biometric override token."

We walked down the sweeping marble staircase into the subterranean levels of the vault.

The air grew cold, smelling of old paper, concrete dust, and the sharp, chemical tang of the industrial dehumidifiers.

Inside the private viewing room, the heavy steel deposit boxes lined the walls like silver graves.

Jessica was standing by the central table, her designer trench coat soaked from the storm, her fingernails digging frantically into a velvet-lined steel tray.

She had three thick stacks of physical bearer bonds clutched to her chest.

"Jessica," I said.

The single word shattered the silence of the vault like a stone through glass.

She shrieked, spinning around so fast she dropped one of the bond bundles onto the concrete floor, the crisp paper scattering across my leather boots.

"Cassidy!" she gasped, her voice high, manic, and completely stripped of the smug arrogance she had worn at the dinner table.

"Please... don't call the police. Brendan told me to come here. He said if anything went wrong with the audit, this box was our escape fund. I didn't know it was stolen! I swear I didn't know!"

I didn't look at the bonds on the floor.

I looked at the small, black ledger book sitting at the bottom of the steel tray.

"The bearer bonds belong to the maritime union pension fund, Jessica," I said, stepping closer to the table.

"Brendan didn't build an escape fund."

"He built a federal embezzlement trap."

"And you just walked right into the center of the frame."

Jessica fell back against the steel drawers, her hands shaking so violently she dropped the remaining papers.

"He told me he loved me," she wept, her mascara smearing into thick black streaks across her cheeks.

"He said you were just a poor, pregnant mistake he had to handle before his mother would clear his trust inheritance."

"He told me once he had the Chairmanship, we would move to Europe."

"Brendan doesn't love anyone but his own reflection, Jessica," I said softly.

"He used your name to sign the lease on the Zurich safe-boxes."

"He used your IP address to route the wire transfers from the union fund."

"By tomorrow morning, the federal prosecutors won't be looking for Brendan's mistress."

"They will be looking for his primary co-conspirator."

She dropped to her knees on the cold floor, her fingers clawing at my coat hem, her voice breaking into a pathetic, ragged plea.

"I'll tell them everything!" she cried. "I have the text messages! I have the emails where he told me how to forge the compliance signatures! Just tell your lawyers to help me, Cass!"

I stepped back from her grip, Marcus instantly moving his body between us to block her from reaching my stomach.

"I am not your lawyer, Jessica," I said, looking down at her.

"And I am no longer the quiet girl you mocked in the nursery."

"Evelyn, call the white-collar division."

"Tell them the secondary suspect has secured the evidence."

As we walked out of the vault, leaving her cries echoing against the steel walls, my daughter kicked again under my palm.

A sharp, distinct movement.

The empire was clearing its borders, but as the elevator rose back to the street level, the screen of my personal phone lit up with a video call from the state penitentiary hospital wing.

Diane, Brendan’s mother, was currently being held in the medical ward after her collapse—and she had just demanded a face-to-face deposition with my legal counsel.
