PART 11: THE AUDIT

PART 11: THE AUDIT
Two weeks later, the legal dust began to settle.
Victor Hayes sat at our dining table again, but this time he brought a bottle of cheap sparkling cider instead of a manila folder.
He poured three glasses, handing one to me and one to Marianne.
"To the new owner of Whitmore Logistics," Victor said, raising his glass with a wide grin.
I blinked, my glass hovering in mid-air. "What do you mean, Victor?"
"The federal receivership just finished evaluating the company's clean assets," Victor explained, leaning forward. "The core shipping and logistics division was completely separated from Eleanor’s laundering scheme. Because your father’s original trust was the primary collateral for that division, the courts have ruled that the ownership reverts entirely to you."
Marianne gasped, dropping her spoon. "Claire... you own the company?"
"The clean part of it," Victor nodded. "The warehouses, the trucks, the contracts. It’s worth roughly forty million dollars. And it’s completely unencumbered."
I sat back in my chair, my mind spinning.
Forty million dollars.
A month ago, I was counting pennies to buy formula at the grocery store while Eleanor’s lawyers threatened to sue me for defamation.
Now, I held the keys to the very empire that had tried to crush me.
"There’s one condition," Victor added, his expression turning serious.
"What is it?" I asked.
"You have to sign the formal management takeover papers at the corporate headquarters tomorrow morning," he said. "The board needs to see the new face of the company."
I looked down at my hands.
May you like
They were steady.
"I'll be there," I said.
