PART 13: THE VISITATION

PART 13: THE VISITATION

Three months passed.

The autumn leaves had turned brilliant shades of orange and red across the city.

According to the court order, today was Daniel’s first supervised visitation with Lily and Noah.

The meeting took place at a state-certified family services facility in a quiet neighborhood.

I sat in the waiting room, holding a diaper bag, while a social worker named Grace prepared the visitation room.

The front door opened, and Daniel walked in.

He looked different.

He was wearing plain jeans and a faded jacket. His luxury watch was gone, replaced by a cheap plastic one.

He looked smaller. Humbler.

When he saw me, he stopped, his eyes dropping to the floor.

"Claire," he said quietly.

"Daniel," I replied, my voice completely neutral.

"How are they?" he asked, pointing toward the back room.

"They're doing well. Lily is crawling now. Noah is trying to talk."

A faint, painful smile touched his lips. "That’s... that’s good."

Grace, the social worker, stepped out into the hallway. "Mr. Whitmore, we're ready for you. Remember the rules: no discussions about the legal case, no gifts without prior approval, and the session will last exactly forty-five minutes."

Daniel nodded submissively. "I understand."

He looked at me one last time before entering the room.

"Thank you for letting me see them, Claire," he whispered.

"I’m not doing it for you, Daniel," I said calmly. "I'm doing it because everyone deserves a chance to change. For their sake, I hope you do."

He nodded, swallowed hard, and walked through the door.

I sat back in the plastic chair, listening to the soft sound of my children’s laughter from behind the wall.

I felt no hatred.

I felt no desire for revenge.

I had built my own kingdom from the ashes of theirs, and the best part about being powerful was choosing when to be kind.
