PART 15: THE SECOND KEY

PART 15: THE SECOND KEY
We sat in a quiet, booth-style table at a twenty-four-hour diner down by the river.
The neon sign outside flickered through the frosted glass windows.
Julian Hayes opened the small wooden box, sliding it across the table toward me.
Inside was an old silver key and a folded piece of parchment paper dated 2004.
"What is this?" I asked, touching the cold metal of the key.
"Before Eleanor married into the family and took control of the real estate division," Julian explained, leaning in close, "your father owned a massive plot of undeveloped land along the Columbia River gorge."
"I thought that land was sold to pay off his medical debts," I said, my brow furrowing.
"It was never sold," Julian whispered. "Eleanor used a forged power of attorney to transfer the title into a blind trust named The Silver Carriage. She hid it from the bankruptcy courts."
My mind raced back to the story of the homeless boy, Nicolás, and the luxury toy chest shaped like a white carriage that had hidden the toxic mold.
The Silver Carriage.
It wasn't just a toy chest.
It was a code name Eleanor had used for decades to hide her most valuable stolen assets.
"That land is now worth over eighty million dollars," Julian said, his blue eyes flashing with intensity. "And because the power of attorney was forged, the blind trust is legally invalid. With this original title and the silver key to the private vault in Seattle, you can reclaim it."
I looked at the key, then at Julian.
"Why are you giving this to me now?" I asked.
Julian smiled gently, his face softening.
"Because your father was a good man, Claire. He helped my brother Victor when we had nothing. I promised him I would protect his daughter when the time was right."

He stood up, buttoning his wool coat.
"The time is now. Eleanor’s empire is gone, but the true inheritance belongs to your children. Go to Seattle, Claire. Finish it."
