PART 18: THE NEW FOUNDATION

The formal opening of the Vance-Beaumont Children's Health Center took place on a bright, beautiful summer afternoon.

The modern glass-and-wood facility sat on a rolling hill overlooking the Columbia River gorge—the very land Eleanor had tried to steal from my father.

Hundreds of guests stood on the lawn, including city officials, pediatric doctors, and families from all over the state.

I stood at the podium, wearing a simple cream dress, looking out at the crowd.

In the front row, Marianne sat holding Lily and Noah, who were both wearing matching white sun hats.

Beside them sat Victor Hayes and his brother Julian, both looking incredibly sharp in their formal suits.

"This center was built on a foundation of hidden truth," I said into the microphone, my voice carrying clearly across the windy hillside. "For too long, the wealth of this region was used to build walls and hide secrets. Today, we tear those walls down."

The crowd erupted into loud, thunderous applause.

I stepped down from the stage and walked over to the main entrance, where a large bronze plaque was mounted next to the glass doors.

It didn't bear the name Whitmore.

It bore a simple dedication:

FOR LAWRENCE VANCE & ARTHUR BEAUMONT: WHO TAUGHT US THAT TRUTH ALWAYS FINDS A WAY INTO THE LIGHT.

As I pressed my hand against the warm bronze, a young boy with messy dark hair and a plain grey shirt walked up the steps, holding a small bouquet of wildflowers.

It was Nicolás, the boy from the mountains of Oaxaca who had saved my babies’ lives in that toxic nursery so long ago.

My father had tracked him down, brought him to Oregon, and funded his entire education at a private academy in the city.

"For you, Claire," Nicolás said, handing me the flowers with a shy, confident smile.

"Thank you, Nicolás," I whispered, pulling him into a tight embrace. "You started all of this."
