PART 14: THE REGISTRY AUDIT

The return to Chicago was a journey through clear skies, the morning sun breaking over the skyline with a brilliant, golden warmth. Three weeks after the Whitehall seizure, Emma stood in the center of the grand command center at the Bennett International headquarters, reviewing the final financial distribution charts prepared by the federal bankruptcy court.

The entire domestic corporate infrastructure of the rogue Bennett faction had been thoroughly dismantled. Richard’s federal fraud conviction remained un-appealable, and Margaret’s multi-million-dollar foreclosure had been fully executed. Her personal jewelry, her luxury vehicles, and her country club memberships had been auctioned off by the state to satisfy the civil restitution order.

"The final transfer numbers just cleared the system, Emma," Lucas said, walking into the room and sliding a sleek black leather portfolio across the desk. "The proceeds from the estate liquidation have generated over one hundred and eighty million dollars. The money has been successfully distributed to the sub-contractors and small business owners Richard defrauded during his final real estate scam."

Emma walked over to the grand glass window, looking down at the city below. She was wearing a perfectly tailored cream suit, her hair down, her father's vintage watch reflecting the morning light. The heavy, suffocating weight of the old legal threats had completely vanished, replaced by a profound sense of clarity.

"We have a visitor in the pavilion lobby, Emma," Lucas said softly, his tone changing slightly. "She’s been waiting since 7:00 AM. She refused to speak to our corporate defense attorneys."

Emma didn't need to ask who it was. "Let her up, Lucas."

A minute later, the glass doors of the command center slid open, and Margaret Bennett walked in. She was no longer the imposing, untouchable matriarch of Chicago high society. She wore a simple, unadorned black dress, her face pale, her silver hair pulled back into a hasty, imperfect bun. She looked like a woman who had spent the last seventy-two hours realizing that her family’s name had been completely erased from the city they used to rule.

"Emma," Margaret said, her voice dropping its aristocratic edge, leaving behind nothing but a raw, desperate plea. "I’m not here to threaten you. The bank took the suburban estate on Friday. I have nothing left. Richard’s appeal was denied this morning. They are transferring him to a maximum-security facility."

Samantha didn't move from the window, her hands slipped into her pockets. "You chose the variables, Margaret. You and Richard believed that by forging the parental waiver, you could humiliate me into surrendering my father's patents to pay off your fraudulent debts. You built your entire life on the assumption that people can be managed through intimidation."
