PART 3: THE FORENSIC COUNTER-ATTACK

PART 3: THE FORENSIC COUNTER-ATTACK
By midnight, the storm over Lake Michigan had escalated into a full gale, public transit lines hummed faintly through the concrete below the penthouse tower.
Lucas sat in the nursery across the hall, the half-folded blue baby sleeper now tucked safely into his jacket pocket. He was hunched over his private laptop, his fingers flying across an encrypted network terminal he hadn't accessed since his early days as an independent compliance auditor.
Beside him stood Julian Hayes, his personal security specialist and a former federal asset recovery agent.
"The digital signature was routed through a third-party server registered to Margaret's private estate trust in Lake Forest," Julian said, pointing at a glowing string of metadata on the screen. "They didn't just forge the document, Lucas. They’ve been siphoning your personal dividend reserves for three months to cover Richard's bad investments in the Atlantic port expansion."
Lucas didn't look up from the screen. "They needed the baby to secure the family lineage trust before the probate court executes the grandfather clause next month."
"Exactly," Julian nodded. "If you are legally declared a single parent with full custody through an incompetence waiver, the trust automatically releases eighty-five million dollars to the corporate account to balance the deficit. Your mother wasn't trying to protect your pride. She was trying to avoid a federal embezzlement indictment."
Lucas slowly stood up, his jaw set in an iron line. He walked back into the master bedroom, where a private emergency medical team he had hired outside the family network was currently wrapping Emma's legs in specialized therapeutic compression wraps.
The lead physician looked up, giving Lucas a grave, professional nod. "The bruising is consistent with prolonged medical-grade restraint use, Mr. Bennett. We’ve logged the forensic photos into the state health database. The police report is active."
Emma reached out, her small fingers finding Lucas’s sleeve. "Lucas... they still control the building’s main elevator overrides. Richard won't let us leave the floor before the board meeting at nine."

Lucas knelt beside the bed, pressing a firm, protective kiss against her forehead before looking into her wide, fearful eyes.
"They think I’m a businessman who obeys the family ledger, Emma," Lucas whispered, his voice steady and cold. "They forget that before I bought the hotels, I learned exactly how to dismantle them. Julian, activate the protocol. We're cutting the lights."
