PART 6: THE LAKE FOREST EVICTION

PART 6: THE LAKE FOREST EVICTION
The winter wind coming off Lake Michigan brought a freezing mist that covered the manicured lawns of the Lake Forest estate.
At 9:30 a.m., two large, commercial moving vans pulled up to the gated entry of Donatella’s private residence. The iron gates, which had been programmed to recognize her car for over a decade, stayed completely shut.
Donatella stood on the other side of the bars, wrapped in her mink coat, her large sunglasses completely fogged by her frantic breathing. She slammed her hand against the security intercom button.
"Open this gate immediately!" she barked. "I am the registered resident of this property! I have a lifetime occupancy easement!"
The intercom speaker crackled, and Samantha’s voice came through, clear, calm, and utterly unbothered by the cold.
"The easement was contingent on the validity of the secondary mortgage loan, Donatella," Samantha said through the microphone. "Since the loan applications were found to be fraudulent, the court has declared the easement null and void. The house belongs entirely to my grandfather’s estate now."
Oliver’s luxury sports car pulled up along the curb behind the moving vans. He stepped out into the freezing mist, his hands shaking as he walked toward his mother. He looked up at the security cameras mounted under the brick eaves, realizing that every single movement they made was being logged into a legal database.
"Mom, stop," Oliver whispered, his voice broken and thin. "The lawyers said if we resist the eviction order, the state prosecutor will escalate the bail requirement. We have to leave."
Donatella turned on him, her features twisted into an expression of raw, unbridled fury. She snatched a designer porcelain vase she had carried out in her arms and hurled it against the iron gate bars. It shattered into thousands of sharp white shards across the wet concrete.
"You let her do this!" Donatella screamed at her son. "You married that quiet, scholarship girl because you thought she was easy to control! You told me she would never look at the corporate ledgers!"

"I didn't know she held the master keys, Mom!" Oliver shouted back, his voice cracking with a sudden, visceral terror. "I thought my name was on the primary title!"
From the security monitor inside, Samantha watched the mother and son turn on each other in the freezing rain, their fragile kingdom turning into nothing but broken porcelain and legal paperwork.
