Chapter 12 - CLAIRE DAWSON BECOMES THE BOSS

Dawson Integrity Group opened seven months later.

Claire hired six people.

Within a year, twenty-three.

Her first major client was not Moretti Holdings.

She refused Adrian's business for three months.

"Conflict."

"I'm no longer your employer."

"You're my boyfriend."

Adrian disliked the word.

"What?"

"Boyfriend."

"You're forty."

"Thank you."

"It sounds ridiculous."

"What do you prefer?"

He thought.

"Partner."

Claire smiled.

"That sounds like a law firm."

"Fine."

"Boyfriend."

He glared.

She enjoyed it enormously.

Eventually Moretti Holdings hired Dawson Integrity through independent board approval.

Claire's team uncovered three minor compliance failures and one significant procurement problem.

Adrian hated every report.

He implemented every recommendation.

That was growth.

Daniel slowly rebuilt his relationship with Claire and Emily.

It was not easy.

Emily refused contact for nearly a year.

Claire attended therapy with her father.

Some sessions ended in tears.

Some in anger.

One ended with Claire leaving after fifteen minutes.

But Daniel kept showing up.

That mattered.

Isabella's relationship with Adrian was harder.

He could forgive fear intellectually.

Emotionally was different.

She returned to Boston permanently.

Adrian saw her once a month.

Then twice.

Eventually dinner.

Claire never pushed.

One evening Isabella brought an old box.

Inside were Vincent's letters.

Real ones.

One addressed to Adrian.

Written two weeks before his death.

Son,

If you're reading this because I failed to tell you myself, remember that power is not the ability to make people afraid. Any fool with a weapon can do that. Power is knowing what you refuse to become, even when becoming it would be easier.

Adrian read the letter alone.

Then again with Claire.

He cried.

Quietly.

Claire held him.

He did not apologize for crying.

That mattered too.

Moretti Holdings changed.

Adrian sold the remaining illegal waterfront interests inherited from older generations.

He brought operations fully into regulated logistics, real estate, and redevelopment.

Some old associates called him weak.

Others called him smart.

Adrian stopped caring.

"You're becoming respectable," Claire teased.

"Disgusting."

"You pay taxes now."

"I always paid taxes."

"Not enough."

"Careful."

She smiled.

Two years after the elevator, Claire finally moved in.

Her conditions filled two pages.

Adrian stared at them.

"Two pages?"

"Boundaries."

"Separate office?"

"Yes."

"No security inside without notice?"

"Yes."

"No staff entering bedroom?"

"Obviously."

"One night per week with no business discussion?"

"Yes."

He looked horrified.

"What do we talk about?"

Claire laughed.

"Normal things."

"I don't know normal things."

"You'll learn."

He signed.

She framed that document.

Three months later, Adrian began behaving strangely.

Claire noticed immediately.

He canceled dinner twice.

Had secret calls with Marcus.

Closed his laptop when she entered.

She watched for four days.

Then cornered Marcus.

"What's happening?"

Marcus looked terrified.

"Nothing."

"You're a terrible liar."

"Adrian will kill me."

"No, he won't."

"Metaphorically."

"Marcus."

He sighed.

"Ask him."

That evening, Claire entered Adrian's study.

"Are you cheating on me?"

Adrian nearly dropped his glass.

"What?"

"Secret calls. Meetings. Marcus lying."

His face became genuinely offended.

"Absolutely not."

"Then what?"

He looked irritated.

"You're ruining it."

"Ruining what?"

Adrian opened his desk.

Pulled out a velvet box.

Claire froze.

"Oh."

"Yes. Oh."

"You were planning to propose."

"Saturday."

"Sorry."

"No, you're not."

"Not entirely."

He walked around the desk.

"Now what?"

"Now you pretend you saw nothing."

"Adrian."

"Claire."

She laughed.

He looked at the box.

Then at her.

"Fine."

He knelt.

Claire stopped laughing.

Adrian Moretti had knelt for no one in his adult life.

Not because kneeling meant weakness.

Because nobody had ever given him a reason.

"Claire Dawson."

Her eyes filled.

"You walked into my office five years before I understood that loyalty could exist without fear."

His voice changed.

"You argued with me when everyone else agreed."

"You told me no when everyone else learned not to."

"You trusted me with the truth when telling me almost got you killed."

Claire cried.

"And when everything I believed collapsed, you didn't rebuild my life for me."

He smiled faintly.

"You made me do the work myself."

She laughed through tears.

"That sounds like me."

"It does."

He opened the box.

"I don't want to own your choices."

A pause.

"I want to be one of them."

Claire covered her mouth.

"Will you marry me?"

"Yes."

Adrian exhaled.

She laughed.

"Were you nervous?"

"No."

"Liar."

"Terrified."

"Better."

He slipped the ring onto her finger.

Then Claire kissed him.

May you like

Marcus, listening accidentally from the hallway because Adrian had instructed him to bring champagne after the proposal, silently walked away.

He had learned enough about Claire Dawson to know interrupting this moment might be the most dangerous thing he had ever done.
