Chapter 10 - THE KISS THAT CHANGED THE RULES

Claire spent another night in the hospital.
She was furious about it.
Adrian did not care.
"You swallowed harbor water."
"I coughed it out."
"Medical expertise?"
"Common sense."
"Doctor says overnight."
"You bribed him."
Adrian looked offended.
"I did not."
"You donated an entire pediatric wing here."
"Years ago."
"Exactly."
"Claire."
She crossed her arms.
"Fine."
He stayed.
At 3:00 a.m., Claire woke and found him asleep in the chair.
Adrian Moretti looked different sleeping.
Younger.
Less dangerous.
Human.
She hated that thought.
Mostly because she had spent years refusing to think about him as anything except her employer.
He woke.
"Why are you staring at me?"
"I wasn't."
"Liar."
"Go back to sleep."
"No."
He sat straighter.
"You okay?"
"Yes."
Silence.
Then Claire asked:
"Why did you jump?"
Adrian frowned.
"What?"
"Into the harbor."
"You were in the container."
"There were rescue teams."
"Too slow."
"You could have died."
"So could you."
"That's not an answer."
He sighed.
"You're obsessed with answers."
"Occupational hazard."
Adrian stood.
Walked toward the bed.
"I jumped because there was no version of that moment where I stood on the dock and watched you disappear."
Claire stopped breathing.
"Adrian."
"I know."
"No."
She looked at him.
"I don't think you do."
"Then explain."
"If this happens—"
She gestured between them.
"Everything changes."
"Everything already changed."
"I'm your secretary."
"Suspended."
"Stop saying that."
"Fine."
He moved closer.
"You're Claire."
Her eyes lifted.
"That's the problem."
"Why?"
"Because I know you."
"So?"
"I know what happens when you care about something."
Adrian waited.
"You become terrifying."
"Accurate."
"You try to control it."
He became serious.
"I won't control you."
"You'll try."
"Probably."
"Adrian."
"And you'll tell me to stop."
"Probably."
"I'll hate it."
"I know."
"And then?"
He thought.
"I'll stop."
Claire studied him.
"Can you?"
"For you?"
He paused.
"I'd learn."
That broke the last defense.
Claire reached for his shirt.
Pulled him down.
Kissed him.
Adrian froze.
For approximately one second.
Then kissed her back.
Carefully at first.
Almost impossibly carefully for a man whose entire life was built around force.
Claire touched his jaw.
He pulled away.
"You're in a hospital."
"Very observant."
"You nearly drowned."
"Also true."
"This is a terrible idea."
"Definitely."
He kissed her again.
Then the door opened.
Marcus stopped.
"Oh."
Claire immediately pulled back.
Adrian turned.
Marcus raised both hands.
"I've survived shootings with less fear than I'm feeling right now."
"Get out."
"Actually, Nathan Vale is alive."
Everything changed.
Nathan had escaped Victor's attack.
The blood belonged to his bodyguard, who survived.
Nathan hid beneath a maintenance dock until federal agents found him.
He had the recordings.
Original audio.
Victor discussing Vincent's poisoning with Arthur Vale.
Victor ordering Daniel's intimidation.
Victor discussing Isabella's disappearance.
Victor planning Adrian's financial frame.
Everything.
Federal warrants were prepared.
But Victor was gone.
His house empty.
Phone abandoned.
Private aircraft untouched.
Passport flagged.
He had vanished inside Boston.
Adrian knew exactly where he would go.
"Moretti Holdings."
Claire frowned.
"Why?"
"Because Victor doesn't run."
"He's literally running."
"No."
Adrian shook his head.
"He retreats to places he controls."
The executive tower had been Victor's kingdom almost as much as Adrian's.
Security systems.
Private passages.
Records.
At 5:40 a.m., an alarm triggered at Moretti Holdings.
Fire.
Fourteenth floor.
Claire's office.
Adrian stared at the notification.
Victor was burning evidence.
And he had chosen Claire's office deliberately.
By the time firefighters arrived, flames had spread through executive records.
Victor was seen entering the building.
Not leaving.
Police surrounded it.
Adrian arrived with Claire despite every argument against it.
She stayed behind the perimeter.
Adrian received a call.
Victor.
He answered.
"Where are you?"
Victor laughed.
"Come upstairs."
"No."
"Afraid?"
"No."
"Then come."
Adrian looked at Claire.
She shook her head.
Don't.
Victor continued.
"Your father's original ledger is here."
Adrian's expression changed.
"If you want the truth about Vincent, come get it."
Claire grabbed Adrian's arm.
"Don't."
Victor heard.
"Is that Claire?"
Adrian said nothing.
Victor laughed softly.
"There it is."
"What?"
"The weakness."
Adrian looked at Claire.
Then smiled.
"You still don't understand."
Victor became quiet.
"Understand what?"
Adrian's voice was calm.
"She taught me I don't have to walk into every trap just because someone questions my courage."
Claire's eyes filled.
Adrian ended the call.
Police tactical teams entered.
Victor was arrested seventeen minutes later trying to leave through a maintenance stairwell.
He had the ledger.
He had a gun.
He never fired it.
Adrian watched officers place him in handcuffs.
Victor looked across the lobby.
Their eyes met.
Nineteen years.
Father figure.
Mentor.
Murderer.
Victor smiled.
"You became soft."
Adrian looked at Claire standing beside him.
Then back at Victor.
"No."
He answered quietly.
"I became difficult to manipulate."
May you like
Victor's smile disappeared.
For Adrian, that was better than revenge.
