Plot twist

Chapter 9 - ADRIAN'S MOTHER CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Isabella Moretti requested the meeting herself.

Neutral location.

A law office.

No weapons.

Adrian laughed at the last condition.

Then agreed.

Claire insisted on coming.

"No."

"Adrian."

"No."

"She arrived with Nathan Vale."

"Exactly."

"Which means this concerns Atlantic Harbor."

"Which means you're staying away."

Claire stared.

"You promised not to own my life."

"I don't."

"Then stop deciding where I go."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"You're exhausting."

"Nine years of administrative experience."

"Five with me."

"Feels longer."

She came.

Isabella entered the conference room at 2:03 p.m.

Adrian stood.

For nineteen years, his memories of his mother had remained frozen.

Perfume.

Dark hair.

A hand against his cheek after his father's funeral.

Then disappearance.

Ocean.

Empty coffin.

Now she stood twenty feet away.

Older.

Alive.

"Adrian."

He did not answer.

She began crying.

He hated that.

"Don't."

Her face crumpled.

"I know."

"No."

He stepped closer.

"You don't get to cry first."

Claire looked away.

This was not hers.

Isabella sat.

Nathan Vale was not present.

Her attorney was.

Adrian remained standing.

"Explain."

Isabella did.

After Vincent died, she suspected Victor.

Vincent had told her about the audit.

She searched his study.

Found records.

Victor discovered her.

He threatened Adrian.

Not Isabella.

Adrian.

At twenty-four, Adrian was already running Moretti operations.

Victor controlled security around him.

Isabella believed one wrong move would kill her son.

Nathan Vale's father, Arthur, offered her escape.

"Arthur was involved."

"Yes."

"Then why trust him?"

"I didn't."

"Yet you disappeared with his help."

"Because he wanted leverage against Victor."

The conspiracy had fractured.

Arthur Vale helped Victor remove Vincent, believing he would gain Moretti waterfront assets immediately.

Victor refused.

He wanted to build Moretti Holdings first.

Arthur feared Victor.

Isabella became insurance.

Arthur hid her in Europe.

In exchange, she surrendered documents.

"Why didn't you come back after Arthur died?"

Isabella closed her eyes.

"Because Nathan continued the arrangement."

Adrian laughed without humor.

"Nineteen years."

"I watched you."

That made it worse.

"What?"

"From a distance."

She knew his career.

His homes.

His injuries.

His relationships.

She knew when he expanded the harbor.

When his brother moved west.

When Adrian survived an ambush at thirty-two.

"You watched."

His voice was dangerously soft.

"Yes."

"But never called."

"I was afraid."

"My father died. You disappeared. Victor raised me."

Isabella cried.

"I know."

"You left me with him."

"I thought he wouldn't hurt you because he needed you."

"Apparently you were right."

"Adrian—"

"No."

He walked away.

Claire followed only when he left the room.

In the corridor, he pressed both hands against the wall.

She stood beside him.

"Don't tell me she was scared."

"I wasn't going to."

"Everyone was scared."

"Yes."

"Daniel was scared. My mother was scared. Evelyn was scared."

He looked at Claire.

"You were scared in that elevator."

"Yes."

"But you still wrote the letter."

Claire's eyes filled.

"People respond differently."

"I know."

He hated that he knew.

He returned to the room.

"Why now?"

Isabella wiped her face.

"Because Victor is going to kill Nathan."

Adrian stopped.

Nathan Vale had finally decided to break from Victor.

Harbor Point had failed.

Federal investigators were closing in.

Nathan possessed original recordings tying Victor to Vincent's death.

He came to Boston to negotiate immunity.

Victor knew.

"Where is Nathan?"

Isabella looked at her attorney.

Then answered.

"Moretti Pier Nine."

Adrian's face changed.

Pier Nine had been closed for redevelopment.

Isolated.

"Why?"

"He said Victor asked to meet."

Claire stood.

"It's a trap."

Adrian was already calling Marcus.

Police and federal agents were notified.

They reached Pier Nine twelve minutes later.

Too late.

Nathan's car sat empty.

Blood on the concrete.

A phone near the water.

No body.

Adrian looked toward the harbor.

Then heard Claire shout.

"Adrian!"

He turned.

A shipping container door slammed behind her.

"Claire!"

He ran.

Locked.

From inside:

"Adrian!"

The container began moving.

A crane.

Someone was lifting it toward the water.

Adrian looked up.

Operator booth.

Empty.

Remote control.

"Cut power!"

Marcus ran.

The container rose.

Claire screamed his name once.

Adrian climbed onto the loading platform.

"Claire!"

Her voice came through metal.

"I'm here!"

The container swung over black harbor water.

Twenty feet.

Thirty.

Power died.

It stopped.

For one second.

Then emergency release activated.

The container dropped.

Adrian watched it fall.

The sound that came from him did not resemble anything his men had heard before.

The container struck the water.

Disappeared halfway beneath the surface.

Adrian jumped.

No hesitation.

January harbor water hit like concrete.

He swam.

Marcus and two men followed.

The container was sinking.

Claire kicked at the door from inside.

Adrian reached it.

"Claire!"

Water rose around his chest.

Locks.

Industrial latch.

Marcus brought bolt cutters from the emergency rack.

They cut.

The door opened.

Water exploded outward.

Claire fell into Adrian.

He caught her.

"Got you."

She coughed.

Shook violently.

"Adrian."

"I've got you."

They reached shore.

Paramedics wrapped Claire in blankets.

Adrian refused one.

He knelt in front of her.

"Look at me."

She did.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Sure?"

"Yes."

Then she touched his face.

"You're bleeding."

He had cut his forehead.

He had not noticed.

Claire started laughing.

Then crying.

Then both.

Adrian pulled her against him.

In front of police.

Federal agents.

His men.

His mother.

Everyone.

He did not care.

Claire buried her face against his chest.

"I thought I was going to die."

His arms tightened.

"So did I."

And for once Adrian Moretti did not hide fear simply because somebody else could see it.

Across the pier, Isabella watched her son hold Claire.

She understood something before either of them admitted it.

Victor Hale had finally found Adrian's greatest vulnerability.

But he had misunderstood what vulnerability meant.

May you like

Claire did not make Adrian weaker.

She was the reason he had finally begun becoming something Victor could no longer predict.
