Chapter 14 - THE WEDDING VICTOR COULD NOT DESTROY

Claire considered postponing the wedding.

Adrian refused.

Then remembered he no longer issued commands about her choices.

"I would prefer not to postpone."

"Better."

"Thank you."

They married in October.

Seventy-eight guests.

Adrian claimed three extra people were security.

Claire claimed they still counted.

Daniel walked her down the aisle.

Halfway there, he stopped.

Claire looked at him.

"What?"

He was crying.

"I missed so much."

She squeezed his arm.

"You're here now."

That was enough.

Isabella sat in the front row.

Emily beside her.

Marcus stood as Adrian's best man.

He complained publicly about the title and privately cried before the ceremony.

Adrian waited beneath an arch overlooking the harbor.

The same harbor that had nearly killed Claire.

She had chosen the location deliberately.

When Adrian learned, he objected.

Claire said:

"I'm tired of letting bad memories own geography."

So they stood where the water was visible.

Not threatening.

Beautiful.

When Claire reached him, Adrian whispered:

"You look..."

She smiled.

"Careful."

He shook his head.

"I don't have a word."

"That's new."

They exchanged vows.

Claire went first.

"Adrian, when I met you, I thought you were the most difficult man in Boston."

Guests laughed.

"I was correct."

More laughter.

Adrian rolled his eyes.

"But I also learned that beneath all the rules you built to survive, there was a man capable of changing them."

Her voice softened.

"You believed trust made people vulnerable. I watched you learn that trust makes us human."

Adrian's eyes filled.

"When I'm afraid, you don't tell me not to be."

"When I'm angry, you don't ask me to become smaller."

"And when I tell you no..."

She smiled.

"You complain extensively and eventually listen."

Laughter.

"I choose you."

Adrian's vows were shorter.

Of course.

"Claire."

He looked at her.

"I spent most of my life believing love was something people could use against you."

Silence.

"Then you used it against me constantly."

She laughed.

"You made me apologize."

"You made me wait."

"You made me explain myself."

"You made me become a man my father would recognize."

His voice broke slightly.

"And you never once asked me to become weak."

He took her hands.

"You only asked me to become safe."

Claire cried.

"I choose you too."

They kissed.

Marcus clapped first.

Then everyone.

At the reception, Adrian danced badly.

Claire told him so.

He blamed her shoes.

She was four months pregnant.

The baby had passed every test.

Adrian attended every appointment.

He brought questions printed in folders.

Claire eventually banned folders.

At dinner, Daniel approached Adrian.

"Can we talk?"

Adrian nodded.

They walked toward the terrace.

Daniel looked at the harbor.

"I hated you."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"Encouraging opening."

"When Claire started working for you."

"Why?"

"Moretti."

Fair.

Daniel continued.

"I thought your family destroyed mine."

"In several ways, it did."

"I thought you'd destroy her too."

Adrian looked through the glass.

Claire was laughing with Emily.

"I almost did."

Daniel frowned.

"How?"

"By being exactly the kind of man Victor taught me to be."

He looked at Daniel.

"She didn't let me."

Daniel smiled.

"She's good at that."

"Extremely irritating."

They shook hands.

Not father and son.

Not yet.

Maybe never.

But family did not need to become simple to become real.

Later, Claire found Adrian alone beside the water.

"What are you doing?"

"Thinking."

"Dangerous."

He put an arm around her.

Their child moved.

Claire grabbed his hand.

"Wait."

He froze.

"What?"

"Here."

She placed his palm against her stomach.

A tiny movement.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Again.

Claire watched his face.

"Did you feel it?"

Another kick.

His eyes filled.

"Yes."

"That's your daughter."

They had learned the sex two weeks earlier.

Adrian had pretended not to care.

He cared enormously.

"She's strong."

"She's the size of an avocado."

"Strong avocado."

Claire laughed.

He knelt in front of her.

Placed his forehead against her stomach.

The most feared man in Boston whispered to a child who could not yet hear him clearly.

"I'm your father."

Claire touched his hair.

"I don't know what I'm doing."

She smiled.

"Neither does anyone."

"I'll make mistakes."

"Definitely."

He looked up.

"You're enjoying this."

"Very much."

Then he became serious.

"But I won't make you afraid of me."

Claire's smile disappeared.

That promise mattered.

"And I won't teach you that love means obedience."

Her eyes filled.

"And if you're ever scared..."

He touched Claire's stomach.

"You tell me."

The harbor moved quietly behind them.

No gunshots.

No containers.

No betrayal.

May you like

Just water.

And for that night, peace.
