Plot twist

Chapter 4 - The Bullet Meant for Lily

Adrian moved before the sound finished.

He threw himself toward Lily.

The bullet struck the marble angel.

Stone exploded.

Rachel screamed.

Marcus pulled both children behind the monument.

Security opened fire toward the trees.

“Car!” Adrian shouted.

Another shot.

Then another.

Not random.

Controlled.

The shooter had elevation.

Marcus saw movement in the chapel bell tower.

“There!”

Adrian fired once.

The silhouette disappeared.

Security rushed forward.

Rachel carried Emma.

Adrian lifted Lily.

They reached the armored SUV.

“Go!”

The driver accelerated.

Adrian looked through the rear window.

A black motorcycle emerged from behind the chapel.

The rider disappeared down a service road.

Marcus touched his earpiece.

“Team Two pursue.”

“No.”

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“Boss?”

“Protect the girls.”

“But—”

“That shot hit where Lily had been standing.”

Marcus understood.

This wasn't assassination.

It was attempted kidnapping through chaos.

Back at the mansion, Adrian placed Lily in the safest room.

Rachel and Emma stayed with her.

Then Adrian confronted Marcus.

“Did you know?”

“About Silas?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Did my father?”

“Dominic?”

Adrian's eyes hardened.

“My father.”

Marcus hesitated.

That hesitation mattered.

“You knew something.”

“I knew Dominic couldn't have children.”

Adrian stared.

“What?”

“An injury when he was young.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I was twenty when I learned. By then, you were already his son in every way that mattered.”

“Did Claire know?”

“Not from me.”

Adrian paced.

His entire identity felt unstable.

Dominic Vale.

The terrifying man who raised him.

Taught him.

Hit him.

Praised him rarely.

Prepared him to inherit.

Not his father.

Silas Mercer.

An accountant supposedly killed fifteen years earlier.

Biological father.

Then Julian.

Brother.

Why Lily?

The ledger from the angel answered part of it.

Claire had traced old trusts.

Dominic had structured control of several family companies through bloodline clauses.

If Adrian died, control passed to his biological descendants.

Lily.

But if Adrian could be legally proven not to be Dominic's biological son, the inheritance structure became vulnerable.

Julian had apparently discovered the truth.

He wanted Adrian disqualified.

Then Lily.

Why?

Because Claire found something else.

A hidden codicil.

Dominic had known Adrian wasn't biologically his.

And he had deliberately rewritten the trust.

My son Adrian Vale, whether by blood or by choice, and his lawful descendants.

Adrian sat back.

Dominic knew.

For all his cruelty, the old man had chosen him.

Julian couldn't break the inheritance through DNA.

So he needed another strategy.

Control Lily.

Use her future rights.

Or remove Adrian and manipulate the child.

Claire had discovered the plan.

That was why she died.

But one question remained.

Where was Margaret?

The keycard from the angel belonged to Crown Meridian Logistics.

Marcus ran the number.

Warehouse 17.

Near the Calumet River.

Adrian wanted to go immediately.

Claire's warning stopped him.

Do not confront anyone until you have everything.

He hated how often his dead wife was still right.

Instead, they watched the warehouse.

Twenty-four hours.

Deliveries.

Guards.

A doctor entered.

Food deliveries.

Then one security camera caught an older woman walking briefly between buildings.

Vanessa saw the image.

She screamed.

“Mom.”

Margaret was alive.

Adrian planned the extraction carefully.

No bloodbath.

No reckless assault.

Police couldn't be trusted yet because Claire's evidence suggested Mercer had paid officials.

So Adrian used the legitimate side of his empire.

A private security contractor.

Attorneys.

A warrant obtained through evidence of unlawful confinement.

Federal contacts Marcus trusted.

At 4:12 the next morning, Warehouse 17 opened under legal search authority.

Margaret was found in a locked upstairs room.

Thin.

Weak.

Alive.

Vanessa collapsed into her arms.

Adrian stood several feet away.

Margaret looked at him.

“Claire?”

Nobody answered.

Margaret understood.

She began sobbing.

“She tried to save me.”

Adrian approached.

“Tell me everything.”

Margaret looked at Lily.

“Not here.”

They moved Lily away.

Then Margaret spoke.

She had discovered Crane copying household records.

She confronted him.

He confessed someone threatened his son over gambling debts.

The information went to Julian Mercer.

Margaret tried to warn Claire.

Before she could warn Adrian, she was taken.

Julian forced Vanessa to cover the disappearance.

Then Claire began investigating.

“Did Julian kill her?”

Adrian asked.

Margaret looked down.

“I don't know.”

“Margaret.”

“I know he ordered someone to stop her.”

“Who?”

She whispered:

“Dr. Crane.”

Adrian's face hardened.

But Margaret shook her head.

“Elliot wasn't the one driving the other car.”

“Other car?”

“The crash wasn't an accident.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

“There was another vehicle?”

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

“Julian showed me photographs.”

“Why?”

“To make me understand what happened when people resisted.”

Adrian felt something dark rising.

Marcus asked:

“Who drove it?”

Margaret looked at him.

“A woman.”

Adrian stared.

“Name.”

“I never heard it.”

“Description.”

Margaret hesitated.

“Blonde. Mid-thirties. Scar near her mouth.”

Marcus's expression changed.

“You know her?”

He nodded.

“Cassandra Reed.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Reed?”

May you like

Marcus closed his eyes.

“My sister.”
