Chapter 9 - JULIAN’S TRIAL REVEALED CLAIRE’S FINAL ACT OF COURAGE

The trial lasted seven weeks.
Adrian attended only when necessary.
He refused to turn Julian into the center of his life.
Vanessa testified.
Margaret testified.
Marcus testified.
Cassandra testified under agreement.
Dr. Crane testified.
Then prosecutors introduced Claire's recordings.
Adrian nearly left.
Hearing her voice in court felt obscene.
Personal.
But Claire had made the recordings for truth.
So he stayed.
Julian watched him from the defense table.
No smile now.
No arrogance.
Just hatred exhausted by consequences.
The prosecution established the chain.
Julian wanted control over Vale assets.
He also wanted revenge for what he believed Dominic had stolen from Silas.
He used Crane's financial vulnerability.
Compromised Marcus's phone.
Kidnapped Margaret.
Threatened Vanessa.
Monitored Lily.
When Claire discovered pieces, Julian ordered Cassandra to frighten her into silence.
Cassandra caused the crash.
Then Julian buried evidence.
But the final surprise came from Claire herself.
A fourth recording existed.
Not hidden in Teddy.
Not the dollhouse.
Not the angel.
It had been automatically uploaded to a lawyer.
Claire had scheduled it to release if she failed to cancel a dead-man trigger.
In it, she described meeting Julian.
Adrian had never known.
Claire sat across from the camera.
“He offered me money.”
She almost laughed.
“Twenty million dollars.”
Adrian stared.
“He wanted me to leave Adrian and take Lily.”
Julian's face tightened.
“He said if I signed documents challenging Adrian's legitimacy, he would guarantee Lily and I were protected.”
Claire's eyes hardened.
“I told him no.”
Adrian felt tears.
“He said Adrian is dangerous.”
A pause.
“He isn't wrong.”
Murmurs in court.
Claire continued.
“My husband has done things I wish he hadn't.”
Adrian lowered his eyes.
“But Julian made a mistake.”
Claire smiled faintly.
“He thought knowing Adrian's darkness would make me believe Julian's was safer.”
She leaned toward the camera.
“It isn't.”
Then:
“I told Julian if he came near my daughter, I would destroy him.”
Adrian almost laughed through tears.
That was Claire.
Julian's attorney objected to parts.
Some admitted.
Some excluded.
But enough remained.
The jury deliberated two days.
Guilty.
Conspiracy.
Kidnapping.
Financial crimes.
Witness intimidation.
Charges connected to Claire's death.
Julian would spend decades in prison.
Cassandra also received a substantial sentence.
Crane lost his medical license and went to prison.
Corrupt officials were exposed.
Margaret received compensation from seized assets but said money felt meaningless.
Vanessa began therapy.
Marcus apologized to Adrian every few weeks until Adrian finally threatened to fire him if he did it again.
“You already fired me twice.”
“I'll rehire you and fire you properly.”
Marcus smiled.
The war ended.
But Adrian faced a choice.
His organization.
The old empire.
Claire's letter.
Burn the throne before you put her on it.
He spent two years dismantling it.
Not literally burning.
Restructuring.
Selling.
Closing.
Legitimizing.
Men complained.
Some left.
Some threatened.
Adrian was prepared.
By forty-five, Adrian Vale still controlled enormous wealth.
But the criminal empire newspapers once whispered about was mostly gone.
Freight.
Hotels.
Commercial real estate.
Restaurants.
Investment.
Legal.
Boring.
Claire would have loved boring.
Rachel definitely did.
“Know what I like?” she asked one evening.
“What?”
“That nobody has shot at us in eighteen months.”
“Low standards.”
“Your family recalibrated me.”
Lily was ten.
Emma six.
They still called themselves sisters.
Rachel and Adrian had been together almost two years.
He hadn't proposed.
Not because he didn't want to.
Because he worried.
Claire.
The house.
Lily.
Emma.
The imbalance.
One night, Lily found Claire's third letter.
The one addressed to whoever helps them live after me.
Adrian had hidden it badly.
Lily read the outside.
“Is this Rachel?”
Adrian froze.
“I don't know.”
“Yes, you do.”
“Children shouldn't interrogate adults.”
“Mommy wrote it.”
“That's emotional blackmail.”
“What's blackmail?”
“Never mind.”
Lily handed the letter to Rachel.
Adrian nearly had a heart attack.
Rachel read it alone.
She cried for an hour.
Then found Adrian on the terrace.
“She was funny.”
“Yes.”
“She knew about the car?”
He laughed.
“Yes.”
Rachel held the letter.
“I'm not replacing her.”
“I know.”
“I never could.”
“I know.”
“And I don't want Lily to think—”
“She doesn't.”
Rachel looked at him.
“How do you know?”
“Because Lily asked me whether you're another mommy but not Mommy.”
Rachel cried again.
Adrian pulled her close.
Then Rachel whispered:
“You know, Claire basically told you to stop being an idiot.”
“She did that frequently.”
“So?”
“So what?”
“Are you going to?”
He understood.
“Rachel Carter.”
She smiled.
“That sounded promising.”
He reached into his pocket.
Her mouth fell open.
“You already had a ring?”
“For four months.”
“You coward.”
“Yes.”
He lowered himself.
Rachel started laughing and crying.
“Will you marry me?”
“Yes.”
“You could let me finish.”
“No.”
“Very romantic.”
“Ask faster.”
He laughed.
She said yes again.

Upstairs, Lily and Emma screamed because they had been watching.
Of course they had.
