Plot twist

Chapter 5 - THE TRAITOR SHARED MARCUS’S BLOOD

Marcus had told Adrian his sister died ten years earlier.

Drug overdose.

Another dead person who apparently hadn't stayed dead.

“Explain.”

Marcus sat inside Adrian's study.

No weapons.

No guards.

Just two men who had known each other since childhood.

“My sister got involved with Mercer.”

“When?”

“Years ago.”

“You told me she died.”

“I thought she did.”

“Thought?”

Marcus looked ashamed.

“She disappeared after stealing from Dominic.”

“How much?”

“Three hundred thousand.”

Adrian laughed without humor.

“And Dominic let her disappear?”

“No.”

There.

Marcus had lied to protect her.

“Dominic ordered me to find her.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“I gave him a body.”

Adrian stared.

“Not hers.”

“No.”

“Whose?”

“Jane Doe. Overdose.”

“You lied to my father.”

“Yes.”

“To save your sister.”

“Yes.”

“And she repaid you by helping kill my wife.”

Marcus looked destroyed.

“I didn't know.”

Adrian believed him.

That was almost worse.

Family.

Again.

Claire had said grief made dangerous people look kind.

But love did too.

Marcus had loved Cassandra enough to bury the truth.

That truth had grown teeth.

They found Cassandra two days later.

Not through violence.

Through money.

Cassandra had rented a condo under an alias.

Paid through Crown Meridian.

Adrian didn't go.

He let federal agents take her.

That surprised everyone.

Especially Marcus.

“You don't want to look at her?”

“No.”

“You've spent eleven months wanting the person responsible.”

“I want the truth more.”

Cassandra negotiated.

Within twelve hours, she offered Julian Mercer.

Her statement was devastating.

Julian hired her to frighten Claire.

Not kill her.

That distinction mattered legally.

But Cassandra admitted following Claire that rainy night.

She forced her toward the curve.

Claire accelerated.

Cassandra clipped the rear of Claire's car.

The car spun.

Went through the barrier.

Cassandra watched it fall.

Then called Julian.

She claimed she hadn't intended the crash.

Adrian didn't care.

Claire died terrified.

Alone.

Trying to get home.

He imagined her hands on the steering wheel.

Calling him.

Twenty-three minutes earlier.

He had missed it.

His guilt returned.

Then he remembered Claire's first recording.

You didn't fail me.

He wanted to believe her.

For Lily, he tried.

Cassandra also revealed Dr. Crane's role.

Crane drugged Margaret.

Falsified psychiatric notes suggesting Claire was paranoid.

Removed security footage.

But Julian orchestrated everything.

Why?

Money was only part.

Hatred was the rest.

Silas Mercer had spent years believing Dominic Vale stole his son.

The truth was more complicated.

Adrian's mother, Sofia, had loved Silas briefly.

When she became pregnant, Silas refused to leave the organization.

Dominic married her.

Raised Adrian.

Silas grew resentful.

He told Julian that the Vale fortune belonged to them.

Julian inherited that resentment.

Adrian inherited an empire he hadn't asked for.

Two sons shaped by fathers who taught them different versions of the same wound.

Then the impossible happened.

Silas Mercer appeared.

Alive.

Eighty-one.

Living under another name in Canada.

Federal investigators located him after Cassandra's testimony.

Adrian traveled to meet him.

Marcus offered to come.

“No.”

“Boss.”

“This isn't business.”

Adrian went alone.

Silas lived in a modest lakeside house.

No guards.

No empire.

Just an old man with oxygen tubing.

When Adrian entered, Silas cried.

“My son.”

Adrian felt nothing.

“Don't call me that.”

Silas flinched.

“I've waited forty years.”

“You had forty years.”

“Dominic would've killed me.”

“So you abandoned me.”

“I survived.”

“You abandoned Julian too?”

Silas looked away.

Interesting.

“You filled his head with stories.”

“I told him the truth.”

“You told him Dominic stole everything.”

“He did.”

“Did he steal my mother?”

Silas said nothing.

“Did he?”

“No.”

“Did he steal me?”

Silence.

“No.”

Adrian laughed.

“So your entire grievance is that a man raised the child you wouldn't.”

Silas became angry.

“I was young.”

“So was my mother.”

“You don't understand Dominic.”

“I understand him better than you.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“He was cruel. Controlling. Violent. And somehow even he managed to stay.”

Silas looked wounded.

Adrian felt no satisfaction.

“Julian thinks he's avenging you.”

“I never told him to hurt Claire.”

“But you taught him he was owed my life.”

Silas cried.

“I wanted my sons together.”

“No. You wanted your regret rewritten.”

Adrian stood.

Silas reached.

“Please.”

Adrian stepped away.

“Your son killed my wife.”

Silas shook.

“Julian is your brother.”

“No.”

Adrian thought of Lily.

Claire.

Then:

“Blood is information. Family is behavior.”

He left.

That sentence stayed with him.

Because when he returned home, he found Rachel asleep on a chair beside Lily's bed.

Emma curled against Lily.

Vanessa sitting on the floor outside Margaret's room.

Marcus waiting downstairs despite being told to rest.

None shared Adrian's blood.

Yet every one of them had stayed.

And Claire—

May you like

dead eleven months—

was still protecting him.
