Chapter 6 - Julian Mercer Came for Lily Himself

Julian stopped hiding.
A message arrived.
You found our father.
Adrian read it once.
Deleted nothing.
Federal investigators traced it.
Another arrived.
He chose you again.
Adrian understood.
This had never really been about inheritance.
Not completely.
Julian had spent his life believing Adrian received everything.
Dominic.
Money.
Power.
Claire.
Lily.
Even Silas's regret.
Jealousy had metastasized into entitlement.
Then Lily's school received a package.
Inside:
A photograph of Claire's wrecked car.
Adrian nearly lost control.
Rachel saw him.
“Don't.”
He looked at her.
“Excuse me?”
“You're about to do something stupid.”
Nobody spoke to him like that.
Except Claire.
“What makes you think—”
“Your face.”
Emma was coloring at the kitchen table.
Rachel lowered her voice.
“He wants you angry.”
“I am angry.”
“He wants you careless.”
Adrian stared.
Rachel continued.
“I don't know your world. I don't want to.”
“Smart.”
“But I know men who need control.”
Something in her voice suggested history.
“They get angry when you stop reacting the way they planned.”
Adrian looked at the photograph.
Claire had told him the same thing differently.
Do not confront anyone until you have everything.
So Adrian did the thing Julian least expected.
He turned evidence over.
All of it.
Federal prosecutors.
Financial crimes.
Kidnapping evidence.
Cassandra.
Crane, eventually found hiding in Mexico and extradited.
Julian's companies were searched.
Accounts frozen.
Associates arrested.
His legitimate board suspended him.
For a man obsessed with power, Adrian chose bureaucracy.
It was devastating.
Julian retaliated.
At 2:00 p.m. on a Tuesday, the mansion alarm activated.
Fire.
Smoke poured from the west wing.
Security moved Lily toward the safe room.
Then communications failed.
Marcus immediately understood.
“Diversion.”
A service vehicle crashed through the rear gate.
Three armed men emerged.
Adrian reached Lily first.
Rachel grabbed Emma.
Vanessa rushed toward Margaret.
Gunfire sounded downstairs.
Adrian pushed Lily into the safe corridor.
Then someone stepped from behind the stairwell.
Julian Mercer.
No photograph prepared Adrian for the resemblance.
Same eyes.
Different expression.
Julian smiled.
“Brother.”
Adrian raised his weapon.
“Don't.”
Julian held a detonator.
“Drop it.”
Adrian looked toward Lily.
Julian smiled.
“Good father.”
Adrian lowered the gun.
“Let the children go.”
“Lily stays.”
“No.”
“She owns half of what should be mine.”
“She owns nothing you can touch.”
“Not yet.”
Marcus appeared behind Julian.
Cassandra's brother facing the man who used her.
Julian turned slightly.
Adrian moved.
Everything happened at once.
Marcus tackled Julian.
The detonator fell.
Adrian kicked it away.
Security rushed in.
Julian pulled a hidden pistol.
Rachel screamed.
A shot fired.
Marcus fell.
Adrian hit Julian hard enough to send him into the wall.
Again.
Again.
Years of rage wanted the third strike.
Claire.
Margaret.
Lily.
Eleven months.
Then Lily screamed:
“Daddy, stop!”
Adrian froze.
Julian was bleeding.
Alive.
Adrian could kill him.
Everyone knew it.
Julian smiled through blood.
“Do it.”
There.
That was what he wanted.
Proof Adrian was exactly the monster Julian had spent his life hating.
Adrian stepped back.
“No.”
Julian's smile disappeared.
Police entered moments later.
Julian was arrested.
Marcus survived.
The bullet entered his shoulder.
Painful.
Not fatal.
At the hospital, Adrian sat beside him.
Marcus looked miserable.
“My sister killed your wife.”
“Helped.”
“I lied about her.”
“Yes.”
“You should've thrown me out.”
“Probably.”
Marcus laughed painfully.
“Then why didn't you?”
“Because Claire said you were the door, not the man walking through it.”
Marcus cried.
“I loved her too.”
“I know.”
That night, Adrian returned home.
Lily was awake.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Were you going to kill him?”
Children ask the questions adults avoid.
Adrian sat beside her.
“I wanted to.”
“Why didn't you?”
He thought.
“Because wanting something doesn't always make it right.”
“Was he bad?”
“He did terrible things.”
“Is he family?”
Adrian swallowed.
“By blood.”
Lily frowned.
“Isn't family people who love you?”
Adrian smiled.
“Your mother would be very proud of you.”
Lily hugged Teddy.
Then:
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Emma's my sister.”
He almost laughed.
“I don't think Rachel knows that.”
“She is.”
“Okay.”
“And Rachel is like another mommy but not Mommy.”
Adrian stopped.
Lily looked worried.
“Is that bad?”
“No.”
“Because Mommy is Mommy.”
“Always.”
“But Rachel makes pancakes.”
“That is a powerful qualification.”
Lily giggled.
Then Adrian realized something uncomfortable.
He had begun noticing Rachel.
Not as an employee.
Not as Emma's mother.
As the woman who stood between danger and his daughter without hesitation.
He immediately buried the thought.
Claire had been dead less than a year.
His life was still burning.
Rachel deserved better than becoming someone's grief.
May you like
So he did nothing.
For once, Adrian Vale understood that not acting could be its own kind of strength.
