Chapter 2 - THE ANATOMY OF A BETRAYAL

The sterile hum of the hospital room suddenly felt like a vacuum, sucking the oxygen straight from Carla’s lungs. Thomas’s heavy footsteps echoed against the linoleum floor as he bypassed Carla’s bed entirely. His eyes were fixed on the middle bassinet, where little Leo—the smallest of the three, wrapped tightly in a striped hospital blanket—was sleeping peacefully.
“Dad, stop,” Carla gasped, her voice trembling. The epidural was wearing off, leaving behind a sharp, burning agony radiating from her lower abdomen, but adrenaline was a powerful masking agent.
Thomas ignored her. He reached his large, calloused hands over the plastic rim of the bassinet. “You’ll thank us later, Carla,” he muttered, his tone sickeningly casual, as if he were picking up a loaf of bread from the grocery store. “Three is too much for Spencer. He works too much. Travis needs this.”
“Don’t touch him!” Carla screamed.
She threw off her blanket and swung her legs over the side of the bed. Searing, blinding pain ripped through her incision site, a jagged reminder that her body had been sliced open just hours prior. She didn't care. She forced herself upward, stumbling forward and grabbing her father’s forearm just as his fingers closed around Leo’s small, swaddled form.
“Let go of my son!” she shrieked.
Thomas’s face hardened into a mask of pure indignation. How dare his daughter challenge him? He had always been the patriarch, the absolute authority. Without a second thought, he wrenched his arm free and violently shoved Carla backward, his hand striking the side of her head with a sickening thud.
Carla fell hard against the edge of her hospital bed, her vision exploding into a constellation of white stars. The physical blow was stunning, but the emotional impact was paralyzing. Her own father had just struck her in a hospital room to steal her newborn child.
She didn't scream again. Panic and raw, primal maternal instinct took over. As Thomas lifted a crying Leo into his arms and turned toward the door where Travis, Megan, and Amanda stood like complicit statues, Carla’s hand blindly scrambled along the bedrail. Her fingers found the red emergency call button.
She didn't just press it; she slammed her fist into it and held it down.
Almost instantly, the door flew open. A senior duty nurse, hearing the commotion and seeing the continuous red light flashing above the door, rushed in. She took one look at Carla bleeding on the floor, the overturned tray table, and Thomas aggressively marching toward the exit with a squalling newborn in his arms.
“Hey! What do you think you’re doing? Put that baby down!” the nurse shouted.
“It’s a family matter,” Thomas barked, trying to shoulder his way past her. “My daughter is hysterical. We are taking the child home.”
The nurse didn’t hesitate. She slammed her hand against a panel on the wall and shouted into her radio. “Code Pink! Code Pink in Maternity Room 412! Lock down the floor!”
Within seconds, the entire atmosphere of the hospital shifted. Blaring alarms pierced the air, and heavy magnetic doors at the end of the hallway slammed shut with a definitive, mechanical thud. Security guards flooded the corridor.

Travis and Megan immediately backed away, their faces draining of color. Amanda clutched her purse, whimpering. But Thomas stood frozen, holding the crying infant, suddenly realizing that his perceived authority held absolutely no weight in the real world.
Two large security guards tackled Thomas to the wall, carefully but firmly prying the crying newborn from his arms. The nurse immediately rushed Leo over to a frantic, sobbing Carla, who was being lifted back into bed by a medical team. She pulled her baby to her chest, sobbing uncontrollably as the police were called. The nightmare was only just beginning.
