Chapter 3 - THE TERRIFYING DISCOVERY

The Phoenix Police Department arrived within ten minutes. By that time, the maternity ward was a fortress. Thomas, Amanda, Travis, and Megan had been separated and detained in an empty waiting room down the hall, flanked by hospital security and uniformed officers.
Carla sat in her bed, clutching Leo while the other two babies, Maya and Sam, slept in their bassinets, oblivious to the chaos. A doctor was examining Carla’s head and checking her C-section incision for internal bleeding.
A tall, sharp-eyed detective named Miller walked into the room. He introduced himself softly, taking out a notepad.
“Mrs. Osborn, I am so sorry for what you’ve just experienced,” Detective Miller said gently. “Can you walk me through exactly what happened?”
Between ragged sobs and shivers of shock, Carla recounted the entire horrific ordeal. The absolute refusal of her parents to help her when she went into labor. The unannounced arrival. The chilling demand. The physical assault.
Miller listened intently, his expression darkening with every word. When Carla finished, he sighed deeply and pulled a thick manila envelope from his jacket.
“Mrs. Osborn, when we searched your father’s coat for identification, we found this,” Miller said, handing her the envelope. “I think you need to look at it.”
Carla opened the flap with trembling fingers. Inside was a stack of legal documents. At the top was a "Voluntary Relinquishment of Parental Rights" form. Beneath it was an emergency guardianship petition, naming Travis and Megan as the sole custodians of one male infant.
The dates on the documents weren't from today. They were dated three weeks ago.
“They planned this,” Carla whispered, her blood running cold. “They didn't just decide this today. They have been planning to steal my baby for weeks.”
“It appears they even forged a signature that looks remarkably like yours on the bottom of the relinquishment form,” Miller noted grimly. “They were hoping you would be too drugged or exhausted to fight back, and they intended to use these papers to bypass hospital security. This isn't just a family dispute, Mrs. Osborn. This is premeditated kidnapping and felony assault.”
Before Carla could fully process the gravity of the betrayal, the door to her room burst open.
Spencer stood in the doorway, his chest heaving, his suit jacket wrinkled and stained with sweat. He looked wild, his eyes scanning the room in absolute terror until they landed on Carla and the three bassinets.
“Carla!” he choked out, rushing to her bedside and dropping to his knees. He wrapped his arms around her and the baby, burying his face in her neck, sobbing uncontrollably. “I’m here. I’m here. Oh my god, I thought I lost you.”

Carla finally let go. The strength she had summoned to protect her children evaporated, and she collapsed into her husband’s embrace, crying until her lungs burned.
Spencer held her for a long time before he looked up at Detective Miller. “Where are they?” Spencer asked, his voice suddenly devoid of all emotion, replaced by a cold, terrifying stillness. “Where is her family?”
