Chapter 6 - THE LEGAL BATTLE
The legal proceedings were brutal, highly publicized, and fiercely contested. Thomas, desperate to avoid prison and save his crumbling social standing in the community, hired a ruthless, high-priced defense attorney. Their strategy was as predictable as it was disgusting: attack Carla’s mental health.
During the preliminary hearings, Thomas’s lawyer argued that Carla was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis. They claimed she had voluntarily agreed to give the baby to Travis months ago, but in a state of hormonal hysteria at the hospital, she had forgotten the arrangement and attacked her own father, who was simply trying to calm the child.
It was a vile, character-assassinating defense. But Spencer and Carla were ready.
They had retained Elias Vance, a bulldog of a prosecutor who specialized in high-stakes family trauma cases. When Elias took the floor, he didn't rely on emotional pleas; he brought an arsenal of undeniable evidence.
First, he played the hospital security footage. The silent video showed Thomas violently shoving Carla, an undeniable act of aggression against a vulnerable, post-operative woman.
Then, Elias brought out the forged documents. He called a handwriting expert to the stand, who conclusively proved that the signature on the relinquishment form belonged to Megan, not Carla.
But the final nail in the coffin was a series of text messages Elias had subpoenaed from Travis’s phone. He read them aloud to the packed courtroom.
“Dad says we just need to wait until the C-section drugs kick in. She won’t even know what’s happening. Just bring the car to the back entrance.”
“Amanda is going to distract the nurses while Dad grabs the boy. Have the nursery ready.”

The courtroom erupted in gasps. The judge violently banged his gavel to restore order. Thomas sat at the defense table, his face pale and sweating. He looked over his shoulder at Amanda, who was weeping uncontrollably in the gallery.
The defense crumbled instantly. There was no postpartum psychosis. There was only a calculated, malicious conspiracy to steal a child. The judge revoked Thomas’s bail on the spot, citing him as an immediate flight risk and a danger to the victims. As the bailiff slapped handcuffs on her father, Carla sat in the gallery, her hand firmly gripped in Spencer’s. She didn't look away. She watched the man who had tormented her for decades finally face the consequences of his arrogance.
