Chapter 2 - The Lockdown and the Unraveling Truth

The grand ballroom of the waterfront estate was transformed from a place of celebration into an active crime scene in less than three minutes.

The glowing crystal chandeliers now cast sharp, clinical light over guest tables where glasses of untasted champagne sat abandoned.

David stood like a fortress beside me, his hand warm and steady against my lower back, his presence an immovable wall between me and the storm brewing across the room.

Outside, the distant, rhythmic wail of sirens cut through the quiet Maryland evening air, growing louder with every passing second.

My father, Richard, was red-faced, his voice booming as he tried to wave down the security detail David’s team had posted at the main double doors.

"This is an absolute disgrace!" Richard bellowed, his voice echoing off the high glass ceilings. "I paid for this venue! You have no right to detain my guests or insult my younger daughter!"

David didn't even look at him. His eyes remained fixed on the mahogany box resting on the white linen table, where Carter was carefully securing the cellular transmitter in a heavy, static-shielded Faraday bag.

"Sir," Carter said quietly, looking up at David. "The signal was transmitting on an encrypted 5G band. It wasn't just recording audio—it was attempting an automated local area network breach."

My heart hammered against my ribs. I looked at the dark green status light that had been blinking beneath the velvet lining.

"My work laptop," I whispered, my voice shaking as the realization hit me. "I brought my secure firm laptop to the estate suite this morning to finish the quarterly audit."

David turned his head slightly, his sharp blue eyes locking onto mine. "Does that laptop contain access to the primary clearing networks?"

"It holds the master authentication keys for three major East Coast financial clearinghouses," I said, cold dread washing over me. "If someone intercepted those credentials, they could execute non-traceable wire transfers worth tens of millions before sunrise."

Across the room, Brittany gasped softly. She tried to step backward toward the exit, but one of David’s teammates, a towering SEAL named Miller, stepped casually into her path, blocking the doorway with a polite, unbreakable smile.

"Where are you going, Brittany?" I asked, my voice surprisingly steady as I stepped away from the table.

Brittany’s hands trembled against her beaded designer gown. "I... I need to go to the restroom, Maddie. This is terrifying! You’re acting like I’m some kind of criminal!"

"You brought the box," I said, walking toward her step by step. "Where did you get it?"

"It’s an antique!" my mother, Patricia, shrieked, rushing forward to wrap her arms protectively around Brittany. "I bought it at an estate sale in Annapolis three months ago! We had it restored for you!"

"Mother," I said, looking Patricia dead in the eye for the first time in my thirty-three years. "You don't know how to spell Annapolis, let alone navigate an antique auction. Who gave you the box?"

Before Patricia could respond, the double doors clicked open, and four federal agents wearing dark suits and gold NCIS shields stepped into the room, led by a sharp-eyed female Special Agent named Vance.

Special Agent Vance scanned the room, her gaze immediately landing on Commander David Thorne.

"Commander Thorne," Vance said, stepping forward with a crisp nod. "We intercepted the transmission origin relay two miles out. We have a active signal lock."

The entire room went dead silent.

Jamal Vance—Brittany’s husband, the quiet orthopedic surgeon who had kept his head down all evening—slowly raised his hands, his face completely drained of color.

"Jamal?" Brittany choked out, her voice dropping an octave.

"It wasn't for the military data, was it?" Jamal whispered, looking not at his wife, but at me. "It was for the Northstar Financial clearance protocol."
