Chapter 3 - The Interrogation and the Corporate Trail

By 1:00 AM, the waterfront estate had been cleared of casual guests, leaving only my immediate family, Jamal, and the federal task force inside the estate’s private library.

The heavy mahogany doors were closed, guarded by two armed agents.

I sat on a leather sofa beside David, my hands wrapped around a warm mug of tea he had forced me to hold. My wedding dress, heavy with lace and silk, felt like armor now.

Agent Vance placed a tablet on the central coffee table, sliding a series of financial logs across the screen.

"Dr. Vance," Agent Vance began, looking at Jamal. "Care to explain why a medical practice in Bethesda opened a secondary corporate account in the Cayman Islands three weeks ago?"

Jamal buried his face in his hands. "I didn't open it. I didn't even know it existed until four days ago when I found the tax audit notices hidden in our home safe."

He lifted his head, his eyes red and filled with genuine horror as he turned to face Brittany.

"She told me it was an investment account her father set up for us," Jamal said, his voice cracking. "She said her family had private wealth they wanted to keep separate."

"Jamal, shut up!" Richard shouted, slamming his hand on the arm of his chair. "Don't you dare blame my daughter for your financial mess!"

"Silence, Mr. Vance," Agent Vance commanded, her voice cutting through the room like a razor. "Dr. Vance, continue."

Jamal took a deep breath, his shoulders shaking. "Brittany has been deep in debt for two years. Private club memberships, designer clothes, offshore gambling lines in Monaco... she owes over one point two million dollars to a private equity firm called Apex Holdings."

I sat up straighter. "Apex Holdings?"

"You know them, Maddie?" David asked gently.

"They aren't a private equity firm," I said, my mind instantly processing the corporate architecture. "Apex Holdings is a notorious front for corporate espionage and black-market financial data trading. They target corporate insiders to siphon clearinghouse keys."

I looked at Brittany, who was currently staring at the floor, her tears smudging her expensive mascara.

"They approached you, didn't they?" I asked her, my voice dropping into a quiet, chilling register. "They promised to erase your debt if you gave them access to my firm."

Brittany didn't answer. She didn't have to. The silence in the room was louder than any confession.

"They knew I was marrying David," I continued, connecting the dots in real time. "They knew a Navy SEAL officer's home network would be hard to breach from the outside. So they built a hardware bug into an antique box, disguised it as a 'family heirloom,' and had you hand-deliver it directly to our table."

"You used my wedding," I whispered, the words burning in my throat. "You used my wedding to ruin my life and David's career, just to pay off your shopping debts."

My mother, Patricia, looked from Brittany to me, her lips trembling as her lifelong illusion of the 'perfect younger daughter' crumbled into dust before her eyes.

"Brittany..." Patricia whispered, her voice barely audible. "Tell her it's not true. Tell her you didn't do this."

Brittany snapped. She lifted her head, her eyes flashing with a dark, bitter rage that I had seen hints of my entire life.

"Why shouldn't I?" Brittany shrieked, glaring at me. "You always had everything, Maddie! The high-paying job, the perfect reputation, the heroic husband! You were always the smart one, the reliable one!"

May you like

"You had a husband who loved you!" I shouted back, standing up. "Jamal gave you everything! You threw it away for status and vanity!"

Agent Vance stood up and motioned to the two officers behind her. "Brittany Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit corporate espionage, federal wire fraud, and illegal surveillance targeting military personnel."
