Chapter 5 - Unmasking the True Mastermind

By 3:30 AM, David and I were in the back of an armored federal vehicle, speeding north toward my firm’s corporate headquarters in downtown Manhattan.
Four of David’s SEAL teammates rode in a secondary vehicle behind us, fully geared and ready to secure the building alongside federal authorities.
My wedding dress had been replaced by dark jeans and a navy sweater David had pulled from my luggage, but the golden wedding band on my left finger gleamed under the streetlights.
"Who had access to your master credentials, Maddie?" David asked, his thumb gently stroking the back of my hand.
"Only three people," I replied, pulling up the executive organization chart on my secure tablet. "The CEO, the Chief Technology Officer, and my senior department deputy, Julian Hayes."
"Julian," David repeated. "The one who sent that massive floral arrangement to the reception?"
I froze. My mind raced back to the morning of the wedding.
Julian had been overly insistent on sending a private delivery team to the estate to set up the executive gift table. He had even called me twice during my hair and makeup preparation to ask if "the family gifts had arrived safely."
"He was verifying the delivery," I whispered, anger flushing through my chest. "Julian was drowning in day-trading losses last year. He asked me for a promotion six months ago, and I turned him down because his security audits were sloppy."
"He didn't just want the money," David noted quietly. "He wanted to frame you. If the breach succeeded, the digital trail would point directly to your master credentials. You would take the federal fall while he walked away with the offshore payout."
Within forty minutes, our convoy pulled up to the glass-and-steel skyscraper housing Northstar Financial.
The lobby was dimly lit, but the executive elevators were active.
Agent Vance and her tactical team moved through the turnstiles with silent, practiced precision, David and I right behind them.
When the elevator doors slid open on the 42nd floor, the floor was silent except for the low hum of server cooling fans and the faint clicking of a mechanical keyboard coming from the corner executive office.
Through the glass wall, we saw him.
Julian Hayes sat in front of three glowing monitors, a black data-cloning drive plugged into the main server terminal, frantically executing a mass transfer file.
Agent Vance didn't knock.
Her team kicked the door open with a thunderous crack.
"Federal agents! Don't move! Keep your hands on the desk!"
Julian jumped out of his chair, his face turning ghost-white as he backed into the window wall, his hands flying up.
His eyes darted from the federal shields to David, and finally to me.

"Maddie?" Julian stammered, his voice trembling. "What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be on your honeymoon!"
"The honeymoon was delayed, Julian," I said, stepping into the room with complete composure. "Because my husband's watch doesn't like your hardware bugs."
