Chapter 7 - The Sweet Taste of True Freedom

Six months later, the golden evening sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of our new home overlooking the Chesapeake Bay.

The house was quiet, filled with the warm scent of fresh coffee and sea air.

Brittany had accepted a federal plea bargain, resulting in a seven-year sentence at a federal correctional facility, while Julian received twelve years for his role as the primary technical operator.

Jamal had officially finalized his divorce, sending me a quiet, heartfelt letter apologizing for not speaking up sooner, before moving to the West Coast to rebuild his medical practice in peace.

My parents had tried to call multiple times, but David and I had established firm, unbreakable boundaries, changing our personal numbers and moving forward with our lives surrounded only by people who truly cared about us.

I walked out onto the back deck where David was leaning against the railing, watching the sailboats glide across the water in the twilight.

He wore a simple grey t-shirt and jeans, his tactical watch resting on his wrist—the same watch that had saved our lives and exposed a multi-million-dollar crime six months ago.

I wrapped my arms around his waist from behind, leaning my head against his back.

David turned around, pulling me into his arms and kissing the top of my head.

"Thinking about the wedding?" he asked softly, a gentle smile touching his lips.

"I was thinking about how lucky I am," I smiled back, looking up into his clear blue eyes. "I spent thirty-three years trying to earn love from people who only saw me as a tool."

"You never had to earn it, Maddie," David said, his voice full of steady, unwavering warmth. "You just had to find the right team."

He took my hand, his thumb stroking my gold wedding band, and we stood together on the deck as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and purple.

The past was behind us, the traitors were where they belonged, and for the first time in my life, I was standing right in the center of my own beautiful story.
