Plot twist

Chapter 11 - THREE YEARS LATER, DANIEL SENT ME A LETTER I ALMOST THREW AWAY

The envelope came through Natalie.

Prison mail.

I left it unopened for four days.

Then read it.

Claire,

I have written this letter fourteen times. Every previous version explained me. I finally understand that explaining myself is part of what I did to you for years.

I paused.

Continued.

I hit you.

No “because.”

I forged your signature.

No “because.”

I stole from you.

No “because.”

I cheated on you.

No “because.”

I planned to leave you with debt and run with Vanessa.

No “because.”

Then:

I used shame as an excuse for greed, fear as an excuse for control, and love as an excuse for ownership. None of those excuses matter.

I sat down.

You asked me once how hard I meant to hit you. I have thought about that question every day. The truthful answer is that the fact I intended to hit you at all should have horrified me. Instead, I tried to negotiate the amount of harm as though there were an acceptable version. There wasn't.

I cried.

Not for him.

For the woman in the kitchen who needed him to understand that.

Too late.

But understood.

Finally.

I am not asking you to forgive me.

I hope your life became everything mine tried to prevent it from becoming.

Daniel

I folded the letter.

Put it in a drawer.

Then took Walter for a walk.

Healing sometimes looks disappointingly ordinary.

That is one of its gifts.
