Chapter 10 - I BOUGHT A HOUSE DANIEL WOULD HAVE HATED

My new home cost less than half the old one.
Daniel would have called it a downgrade.
That was part of its charm.
Two stories.
White siding.
Blue door.
A garden.
Big kitchen.
No marble.
I deliberately chose butcher-block counters.
My sister laughed.
“Trauma-informed countertops?”
“Absolutely.”
I bought mismatched mugs.
Secondhand furniture.
A ridiculous yellow sofa.
Things Daniel would have considered unsophisticated.
For the first time, every object in my home existed because I liked it.
Not because it impressed someone.
I adopted a dog.
A mutt named Walter with one bent ear.
Daniel hated dogs.
Walter immediately slept on the sofa.
Perfect.
Bennett Advisory expanded.
I promoted my longtime deputy, Jasmine Reed, to president.
Not because I was stepping back.
Because strong companies shouldn't depend on one person.
I had learned that from watching Daniel build an empire around himself.
His company died when he fell.

Mine became stronger when I shared power.
Funny how that worked.
