Plot twist

Chapter 6 - VANESSA TURNED ON DANIEL, BUT SHE HAD ONE SECRET LEFT

Vanessa signed a cooperation agreement six weeks later.

She admitted opening shell companies.

Receiving funds.

Helping Daniel conceal assets.

She insisted she didn't know the full scope of the fraud.

Evidence suggested otherwise.

But then she gave investigators something important.

A storage unit.

Daniel had rented it under another name.

Inside were boxes.

Hard drives.

Financial records.

Cash.

$780,000.

And passports.

One for Daniel.

One for Vanessa.

Both legitimate.

Alongside them were two forged passports with alternate names.

Escape documents.

The house sale had a deadline because Daniel wasn't simply preparing for divorce.

He was preparing to run.

Vanessa claimed she didn't know about the fake passports.

Nobody believed her.

Then investigators found a handwritten itinerary.

New York.

Lisbon.

Monaco.

Dubai.

Singapore.

Daniel planned to move through jurisdictions while assets disappeared behind companies.

I sat with Natalie reading the plan.

“He was going to leave me with everything.”

“Yes.”

“Debt.”

“Yes.”

“Investigations.”

“Yes.”

“And disappear.”

“Yes.”

I looked at my hands.

Then laughed once.

“What?”

Natalie asked.

“He told me I wouldn't have this life without him.”

Natalie waited.

“He was right.”

She frowned.

“Which life?”

“The one I’m about to have.”

For the first time, I imagined future Claire.

No Daniel.

No monitoring his mood.

No rescuing his company.

No pretending his success was larger than mine.

No wondering whether another hotel receipt meant what I already knew it meant.

Freedom was frightening.

May you like

But so was a locked door.

At least freedom opened outward.
