Plot twist

Chapter 9 - THE HOUSE DANIEL TRIED TO STEAL BECAME THE LAST THING I WANTED TO KEEP

After sentencing, I walked through the house alone.

Daniel received a substantial prison sentence.

Financial restitution.

Civil judgments.

His company entered liquidation.

My stolen funds were largely recovered through frozen accounts and asset sales, though not every dollar.

Vanessa received a reduced sentence because of cooperation.

Thomas lost his law license.

Rebecca faced penalties and probation after cooperation.

Michael Barrett went to prison.

Consequences.

Everywhere.

But the house remained.

Three million dollars.

Maybe more now.

I stood in the kitchen.

The marble counter had been repaired.

The fruit bowl replaced.

The broken camera gone.

A new one watched from the corner.

For months, I thought keeping the house meant winning.

Daniel wanted it.

He didn't get it.

Victory.

Then I realized I hated waking there.

Every doorway contained memory.

Every room had a version of me making herself smaller.

I called a realtor.

Natalie was shocked.

“You fought to keep it.”

“I fought to stop him from taking it.”

“Different thing.”

“Yes.”

“What will you do?”

“Sell.”

The house listed for $3.25 million.

It sold for $3.4.

I stood outside on closing day.

The new owners were a couple with two children.

The little boy ran toward the backyard before his parents could stop him.

His sister found the staircase and shouted about choosing the biggest bedroom.

The mother apologized.

“Don't.”

I smiled.

“Let them be loud.”

I handed over the keys.

No grief.

Only relief.

The house had saved me once.

Not because of its value.

May you like

Because of the camera above the pantry.

Now I let it go.
