Chapter 12 - I MET VANESSA AGAIN, AND SHE WASN’T THE WOMAN I REMEMBERED

Five years after the assault, I saw Vanessa at a courthouse conference on financial abuse.
I was speaking.
She was attending with a reentry nonprofit.
I almost left.
Then she approached.
“Claire.”
She looked older.
So did I.
Good.
Life had happened to both of us.
“I won't come closer.”
she said.
“Thank you.”
“I wanted to apologize.”
I waited.
She didn't cry.
Didn't explain Daniel.
Didn't blame manipulation.
“I knew enough.”
she said.
That got my attention.
“I didn't know everything. But I knew enough to know the money wasn't clean.”
I stared.
“I wanted the life he promised me more than I cared what it cost you.”
Truth.
Ugly.
Useful.
“I’m sorry.”
I nodded.
“Okay.”
She looked surprised.
“That's it?”
“What do you want?”
“I don't know.”
“Forgiveness?”
“No.”
“Friendship?”
She almost laughed.
“No.”
“Then okay is enough.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
As she walked away, I realized I didn't hate her anymore.
That didn't mean I liked her.
It meant she no longer lived rent-free inside my nervous system.
May you like
Freedom again.
Different door.
