PART 15: THE SANCTUARY ASSAULT

The voice communication link to our northern mountain sanctuary exploded into a chaotic storm of gunfire, shouting, and explosions.
I sat in the back of the rushing transport vehicle, my hands clutched tightly around the satellite receiver as I listened to the battle.
Thomas and his security detail were fighting a losing war against a swarm of highly advanced Apex Group mercenaries.
“They’ve breached the outer perimeter blast doors, Dr. Vance!” Thomas’s voice cut through the heavy static, accompanied by a loud blast.
“They’re using heavy thermite charges! We’ve taken heavy casualties! They are moving toward the underground bunker room!”
“Hold the line, Thomas! I am deploying our secondary air-support units from the Seattle base!” I screamed into the receiver.
Suddenly, a sharp, cold silence took over the communication line, the sounds of gunfire instantly vanishing into nothingness.
A second later, a familiar, smooth, and utterly terrifying voice filled the speaker, chilling the air inside our speeding vehicle.
“The sanctuary has fallen, Selena,” Mark whispered, his tone vibrating with a triumphant, clinical satisfaction.
“Your elite security guards were entirely inadequate against the tactical funding of The Apex Group.”
“I am currently looking at our beautiful daughter, Sophie. She looks so remarkably peaceful inside this steel bunker.”
“She remembers her father, Selena. She remembers the special medicine that made her so quiet and perfectly obedient.”
“No! Don't you dare touch her, Mark!” I roared, my eyes burning with a primitive, unyielding maternal fury.
“I am taking her with me to our private offshore research vessel anchored just five miles off the coast of Boston,” Mark continued calmly.
“You have exactly twenty-four hours to bring the master encryption drive to the abandoned industrial shipyard at the harbor.”
“If you attempt to bring the federal authorities, I will initiate the final, permanent chemical erasure protocol inside her mind.”
“She will become a complete blank slate, a doll with no memories, no personality, and no identity left to save.”
The communication line went dead, leaving me staring at the blank screen of the receiver as tears of pure rage flowed down my cheeks.
He had taken my child again, tearing her away from the safety I had sacrificed everything to build over the past months.
But as the vehicle slammed its brakes outside our private airfield, I looked down at the titanium drive in my hand and stopped crying.

He thought he had completely broken my spirit, thought he had forced me into a position of absolute submission.
He didn't know that I had already coded a lethal, self-replicating digital virus directly into the core of that master encryption drive.
