PART 8: THE SYNDICATE'S WILL

The storm outside the cottage raged with a furious intensity, mirroring the cold calculations happening inside my mind.
I carried a sleeping Sophie to her bed, locking her door from the inside before heading down into the small, damp basement of the house.
Beneath a heavy stack of rotting firewood lay an old, rusted iron floor safe that had belonged to my grandfather decades ago.
It possessed no digital components, no wireless receivers, and no computer chips that a corporate syndicate could exploit or manipulate.
I turned the mechanical dial meticulously, the heavy steel tumblers clicking into place until the iron door swung open with a groan.
Inside was a single, pristine velvet case containing an old satellite telephone and a black titanium corporate ledger.
My father had been a senior intelligence contractor before his retirement, a man who understood that true power never relies on the public grid.
I turned on the satellite phone, waiting for it to connect directly to an independent orbital network far above the corporate clouds.
I dialed a private twelve-digit code, my heart hammering against my ribs as the line tone hummed across the ocean.
“Identify,” a sharp, clinical female voice demanded on the second ring, her tone completely devoid of any emotion.
“This is Selena Rose. Code alpha-seven-niner-omega,” I replied, my voice sounding steady and lethal in the quiet basement.
“The Vance contingency protocol has been triggered. My digital infrastructure has been compromised by a corporate entity.”
There was a brief, five-second pause as the operator verified my vocal patterns against a secure, offline biometric database.
“Identity confirmed, Dr. Vance. The secondary network is now active. Your liquidated assets have been restored via our private treasury.”
“We have detected the rogue signal origin point targeting your Oregon residence. It is not originating from a foreign country.”
“The digital attacks are being deployed from a private legal complex located just twenty miles outside of Portland.”
“The facility belongs to Vance-Croft Legal Partners—the elite corporate defense firm representing your ex-husband, Mark.”
The revelation hit me like a lightning strike, the pieces of the puzzle instantly locking together in my mind.
Mark wasn't just sitting quietly in his prison cell, accepting his life sentence while his corporate masters fell to pieces around him.
He was actively directing the shadow board from inside the maximum-security facility, using his high-priced attorneys as couriers.
They were using the legal shield of attorney-client privilege to execute the digital eradication of my life and my daughter’s safety.
“Do you require a tactical extraction team, Dr. Vance?” the voice on the satellite phone asked, waiting for my command.
“No,” I replied, a dark, dangerous smile finally gracing my lips as I gripped the titanium ledger tightly.
“An extraction just keeps us running. I want an offensive deployment. I am going to face the architect of this nightmare myself.”
I hung up the phone, walked back upstairs into the bright morning light, and packed our suitcases into the rugged station wagon.
I drove Sophie straight to a highly secured, private estate owned by my father’s former agency partners deep in the mountains.

With my daughter safe behind bulletproof glass and armed guards, I turned the car toward the state penitentiary in downtown Portland.
It was time to have a face-to-face conversation with the man who believed he could control my destiny from behind a prison wall.
