PART 1: THE SECRET DOSAGE / Chapter 5 / 20

PART 5: THE CO-CONSPIRATOR'S PROTOCOL

The rain was falling in relentless, heavy sheets the following morning when I arrived at the First National Bank in downtown Portland.

I had left Sophie under the strict, watchful eye of two off-duty police officers I had hired using the very last of my emergency funds.

I walked through the grand marble lobby, my hands shoved deep into the pockets of my trench coat, my fingers tightly gripping the silver key.

The bank manager looked at the key, then at my identification, before leading me down into the cold, sterile depths of the subterranean vault.

He turned his master key, allowed me to turn mine, and then left me completely alone inside the small, private viewing room with Box 404.

With a racing heart, I lifted the heavy steel lid of the safety deposit box, revealing a thick, leather-bound corporate binder inside.

The first page bore a prominent, embossed golden seal: Vanguard Pharmaceuticals - Project Morpheus - Strictly Confidential.

As I flipped through the pages, the horrific magnitude of the conspiracy unfolded before my eyes in terrifying, clinical detail.

Mark wasn't just a desperate man experimenting with household medications; he was a senior research director for a multi-billion-dollar firm.

The journal entries detailed a massive, illegal clinical trial funded by a shadow executive named Dr. Julian Croft.

They had been developing a highly potent, behavior-modification chemical designed to induce absolute compliance and emotional numbness in subjects.

And because human trials were strictly prohibited by federal law, Mark had volunteered our own innocent daughter as the primary test subject.

In exchange for his secret data logs, Vanguard Pharmaceuticals had been funnelling millions of dollars into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the private viewing room was abruptly pushed open, cutting through the silence like a thunderclap.

I spun around, my hand instinctively slamming the corporate binder shut as a tall, impeccably dressed man stepped into the small room.

He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his silver hair combed back perfectly, his eyes reflecting the cold, calculating intelligence of a predator.

“You have a remarkably resilient mind, Mrs. Miller,” the man said, his voice smooth, elegant, and entirely devoid of human empathy.

I recognized his face instantly from the corporate photographs inside the binder; it was Dr. Julian Croft himself.

“How did you find me here?” I demanded, backing away until my spine pressed hard against the cold safety deposit boxes behind me.

“We have digital transponders embedded inside the fabric of that key, my dear,” Dr. Croft replied, taking a slow step forward.

“Mark was a brilliant scientist, but he became incredibly sloppy and careless when his emotions interfered with the research protocols.”

“He believed he could use our corporate chemical compounds to build a perfectly submissive, quiet family for himself.”

“But the data inside that binder belongs entirely to Vanguard Pharmaceuticals, and it is worth more than your life could ever buy.”

He extended his gloved hand toward me, his fingers gesturing for the binder with a casual, terrifying confidence.

“Give me the project binder, Selena, and I will ensure that you and your daughter are allowed to live out your days in that pathetic little cottage.”

“Refuse me, and I will ensure that the state appellate court reverses Mark’s sentence on a technicality, releasing him back into your world.”

The threat hung in the air like a lethal poison, freezing the blood in my veins as the image of Mark’s cold face flashed through my mind.

If Mark were ever released, if he ever found out where we lived, he would finish the process of destroying Sophie’s mind completely.

But looking into Julian Croft’s eyes, I realized that handing over this binder would mean signing our death warrants anyway.

Monsters like him never left witnesses alive to tell the truth to the federal authorities or the global media outlets.

I gripped the heavy leather binder tightly against my chest, a fierce, unyielding maternal instinct taking total control of my body.

“You are never getting this data back, Dr. Croft,” I whispered, my voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal register.

I lunged forward, using the heavy edge of the corporate binder as a weapon, slamming it violently across his face.
